The result briefs are out! Two RCTs, one in Bangladesh and another in Colombia, were conducted in collaboration with Sesame Workshop, BRAC, Innovations for Poverty Action, and ARCED Foundation under the Play to Learn Project funded by The LEGO Foundation. We are sharing the much-awaited results below. What makes it better is the ability to release them on the first #InternationalDayofPlay, reinforcing the importance of play-based learning in the early years.
🎉 On this very first #InternationalDayofPlay, we’re excited to release two new briefs from our Play to Learn project, showcasing the transformative power of play for fathers and through children’s media. 🌍👶 Play is more than fun — it's essential for children’s development. It builds resilience, confidence, and crucial life skills. Yet, to truly harness its power, we need supportive policies, training, and investment in inclusive, safe play spaces. See the two briefs below to learn what we found evaluating two different interventions that integrate play into early childhood development programming. 1️⃣ Father Engagement Model in Rohingya Camps and Host Communities in Cox’s Bazar, #Bangladesh: In Rohingya camps and nearby communities, fathers are being empowered through play by the NGO BRAC. Over a 6-month period, we found that this program improved fathers’ engagement with their family and their parenting , reduced child corporal punishment, and for disadvantaged families reduced father’s depression and boosted child vocabulary. 2️⃣ Children’s Media Program on Emotional and Math Skills in #Colombia: In areas of Colombia affected by conflict, where traditional play may face disruption, such as in Venezuelan refugee communities, a digital format for learning through play was introduced. Through “Watch, Play, Learn,” children receive Sesame Workshop’s playful, educational content via WhatsApp. We found that these short, engaging videos improved children’s ability to identify emotions, encouraging children to learn through play. Let's celebrate #InternationalDayofPlay by recognizing the importance of play in every child's life! 🎈✨ 📢 Visit our website to read the briefs and learn more about Play to Learn: 🔗 https://bit.ly/4aX0UEP

#Preschool children with disabilities are more likely to be out of school than children without disabilities. 📚 Access to #school, appropriate classroom support, #accessible facilities and trained teachers are key to meeting the diverse needs of all children in the classroom and supporting all children in their #learning journey. In #Tajikistan, USAID & UNICEF are supporting the Government of #Tajikistan in improving children's school readiness and learning outcomes in pre-primary education through #inclusive, student-centered early childhood education. I am a passionate believer in play - for children, for youth, - for all of us. I would argue that during childhood and adolescent play is probably needed more than ever before, - both to give children a break, but also to ensure that we give them the opportunity to make the world around them meaningful through play. We see an unpresedented mental health crisis among children and adolescent, which we need to act on. Thus, I believe it is on us - the adults to start listening, to better understand - and to change our ways, so we can meet children and adolescents where, how, and when the need us. Are you ready to become a fierce human rights defender of children's rights? - Reach out to hear more, how The Child and Youth Friendly Governance Project can help children and young people have an active voice in your decision-making processes. Personally, I do not think we can afford not to do this!
At this week's Roundtable Discussion on the Power of Play, children and young people from three different continents presented their Call to Action with concrete recommendations to governments, the UN, civil society organisations, schools, caregivers, and corporations on how they can advance children’s right to play. The Call to Action, which has been informed by local focus group discussions and online consultations with over 10,000 children and young people worldwide, emphasises the importance of play to children's well-being and development. Children and young people stress that play is a right for all children and emphasise the importance of developing play solutions in collaboration with children themselves, particularly those with special needs. Stay tuned as we post recommendations from the Call to Action over the coming weeks! The global consultations with the children and young people have been supported by the Child and Youth Friendly Governance Project in collaboration with BRAC, The Concerned for Working Children, Eurochild, Save the Children International, the Government of Sierra Leone, International Play Association (IPA World), and Play in Education, Development, and Learning (PEDAL) at the University of Cambridge. The strictest safeguarding standards have been applied throughout the process. #PowerofPlay #ChildRights #ChildandYouthFriendlyGovernance

Today our Tanzania Early Childhood Education and Care (TECEC) team had a home visit where we found children immersed in play. Play and learning are inseparable in early childhood, but their importance often goes unrecognized. Play is not merely a pastime; it is vital for a child's development. Through play, children develop problem-solving, creativity, and social skills. We advocate for recognizing the value of play. Let's raise awareness about the significance of play in early childhood and ensure every child has the opportunity to play and explore freely. #PlayAndLearn #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment #PowerOfPlay

Education is a human right and so it shouldn't be a luxury item. In addition, education plays a crucial role in achieving #globalgoals. This makes it clear that everyone, especially children must have access to quality education regardless of their social backgrounds. Because education empowers people creating global citizens who are aware of their roles in establishing a better sustainable society for all. In this #Internationaleducationday let's actively engage in enhancing opportunities for children to have quality education 📝💡 #education #internationaleducationday #educationforall #globaleducation #qualityeducationforall #humanrights
Every child deserves to have a safe, quality education. But this isn’t always a reality. More children are facing obstacles due to the crises and conflict around them, with limited access to resources and learning, which impacts their futures. In Sri Lanka and around the world, Save the Children works tirelessly to protect children’s right to learn. This #EducationDay and every single day, we will stay true to our mission of creating a better future for children, where they can learn & thrive.📚❤️ #InternationalDayofEducation2024 #educationforall #childrights #srilanka #lka

Dear Parents, fostering independence in children is essential for their growth and development. Below are some tips about how you can encourage independence while providing support to your children: 1. Allow them to make choices: Encourage children to make decisions, such as what to wear or what activities to do, within appropriate boundaries. 2. Teach them life skills: Teach age-appropriate tasks like dressing themselves, preparing simple meals, or cleaning up after themselves. 3. Offer praise and encouragement: Acknowledge and praise their efforts and accomplishments, no matter how small. 4. Set clear expectations: Establish clear rules and boundaries and explain the reasons behind them. 5. Be patient and supportive: Allow children to try new things and make mistakes and provide guidance and support when needed. By fostering independence, we empower our children to become confident and capable individuals. #ParentingTips #EncouragingIndependence #happykids #admissionsopen2024_2025 #holisticdevelopmentofkids

Our work in Tanzania focuses on making sure we can quickly identify children with deafblindness so they get the right support, particularly in school. After all, every child should have a right to education. Our efforts have made a significant impact: 📚 2018: The Tanzanian Government adopted our Learning Support Assistants model for inclusive education and curriculum, emphasising the importance of support for children with disabilities in the classroom. 🏫 2023: Our inclusive education curriculum, which provides guidance on supporting children with deafblindness in mainstream schools, was adopted by the Tanzanian Government. 👩⚕️ 2024: The development of the National Eye Health Strategic Plan was developed to commit investment in early identification and support for deafblindness across all regions of Tanzania. We are proud to see our initiatives driving change and fostering a brighter future for all children so they can realise their potential.
