Many industries have a strong bias favoring male success. In 2014, I finally earned my doctorate in chemistry after a lot of hard work and was very excited to receive my Certificate of Appreciation. Upon closer inspection, the document actually says it was given in recognition of "HIS Ph.D work" instead of HER. It was an unfortunate typographical error, and it took me five long years to notice it.   This typo error on a certificate that validates my efforts highlights why it is very important for us—extraordinarily successful women in male-dominated fields—to support and promote each other.   As women, we must build a network that contributes to our collective growth. At TAI Engineering, we are incredibly proud of our talented women engineers who contribute significantly to our projects and innovations every day. As we celebrate Women Engineers Week, we recognize the vital role that women play in shaping the future of engineering. The growth of women in engineering has been remarkable. Currently, women make up approximately 16% of professionals in architecture and engineering occupations in the US. Although this is a positive trend, there is still much work to be done to achieve gender parity in our field (Fictiv) (Denken). Globally, women now represent 29% of the STEM workforce, with over one million women working in STEM occupations (IET - Home). In engineering roles specifically, the number of women has increased from 36,734 to over 62,000 in the past seven years (Stem Women). Despite these advancements, women still face challenges in representation, particularly in leadership roles. We believe that diverse perspectives lead to better decision-making, enhanced creativity, and more innovative solutions. By fostering an inclusive environment, we aim to inspire the next generation of women engineers to break barriers and lead the way in technological advancements. Celebrating Women in Engineering: Breaking Barriers and Achieving Equity June 23 marks International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in engineering. Organizations like the Society of Women Engineers and Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide are leading the charge in promoting gender equity and encouraging more women to pursue careers in engineering. Despite significant progress, women still face numerous challenges in engineering. In the UK, women make up only 16.5% of professional engineers, with even lower percentages in fields like mechanical engineering and computer science. Report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics further breaks down the numbers. It reveals in greater detail how women are underrepresented comprising: 8.5% of mechanical engineers 17.4% of aerospace engineers 27.9% of chemical engineers 17.1% of civil engineers 15.7% of computer hardware engineers 8.1% of electrical and electronics engineers 25% of industrial engineers, including health and safety 14.9% of all other engineers Moreover, the average income of female engineers are 3.5% more than male engineers and average age of female engineers if about 37 while that for male engineers is 42, at the same more number of female engineers occupying higher hierarchical work positions than male engineers. Women in engineering have made notable patent contributions, such as India's first-ever all-women crew flying a long-haul flight from San Francisco to Bengaluru in 2019. This achievement highlights the capabilities of women in engineering and underscores the importance of promoting equal opportunities and challenging gender stereotypes. As we celebrate INWED, it is crucial to recognize the ongoing efforts of organizations like SWE and WIDS in fostering a more inclusive and diverse engineering community. By supporting women in engineering and providing them with the necessary resources, we can create a more equitable and innovative industry that benefits everyone. 👩🔧👩🔬👷♀️Happy International Women in Engineering Day (for yesterday)! 👩🏫👩💻👩🏭 Women are still hugely underrepresented within Engineering and unfortunately in 2023, the numbers dropped to just 15.7% (a decrease of ~38,000 women). A key part of the puzzle is representation, demonstrating to the next generation that an engineering career could be for them and also that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to. We are seeing more and more women leave their engineering careers from the age of 35. It’s speculative as to why this is but it seems obvious to consider that personal life must have a big impact. I was told from very early on in my career that I could not have a family whilst also focusing on developing my engineering career. That was absolutely incorrect. I am now Head of Engineering with a team of over 50 engineers, whilst managing a young family. Is it difficult? Absolutely. Is it achievable? Of course! Let’s use #INWED as an opportunity to celebrate the amazing women in engineering who are the role models for the next generation. Today, on International Women in Engineering Day, we celebrate the talented and trailblazing women in this vital sector. But it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the sobering reality that still only 16.5% of engineers are women. There are, of course, many reasons for the shortfall, but the statistic absolutely underscores the important role engineering businesses play in changing the status quo and fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment that nurtures a diverse workforce and attracts more females into this rewarding and exciting career. At IAAPS, we recognise the immense talent and potential women bring to engineering. Despite facing the same challenges as our peers, we are committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring women feel supported and empowered to thrive in their engineering careers. We have introduced several initiatives to actively promote gender diversity, from refining our recruitment practices and increasing the representation of women in senior leadership roles to engaging strong male advocates and allies who can uplift and champion our female colleagues. Together, we are making progress, step by step, and we are determined to continue these strides. With that said, we are excited to spotlight Molly Baria, our new work experience engineer who joined IAAPS for an eight-week placement last Monday, eager to gain more technical and hands-on experience in the industry. Molly, a 22-year-old Aerospace Engineering student at the University of Bath, has had an interest in engineering since early childhood. Inspired by her grandfather and father, a Mechanical Engineer, she is determined to break away from the stigma that women cannot excel in male-dominated sectors. Her advice to fellow young female engineers embarking on their careers: “It’s important to be aware that there is a high chance of experiencing imposter syndrome, but don’t let this stop you from pursuing your desired career path. It may not always be easy, but you will gain the strength you need to work through any challenges – and the outcome will be incredibly rewarding.” Welcome to IAAPS, Molly.
