Hot on the heels of a recently announced key hire and strategic growth strategy, HutanBio in Cambridge has advanced its seed round to £3 million with investment from UKI2S. HutanBio is on a mission to disrupt the biofuel industry, scaling up its HBx program to make carbon-negative biofuels to meet the challenge of transitioning to net zero in the marine and heavy transport sectors. The additional investment will accelerate its growth plans. UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund (UKI2S) will join existing lead investor, Clean Growth Fund. The commitment from UKI2S, a publicly funded organisation specialising in early science and knowledge-based innovations that have high-impact potential – managed by impact-led Future Planet Capital (Ventures) Limited – further bolsters the growing confidence in HutanBio’s technology and its future potential. The HBx biofuel platform represents the culmination of 10 years of research and the world’s largest-ever marine microalgae bioprospecting programme.  Headquartered at St John’s Innovation Centre, HutanBio has R & D pilot sites in Malaysia. IFC - International Finance Corporation and OCP Group have announced an agreement to increase the production of low-carbon fertilizers using solar energy, for which IFC is to provide €100 million green loan. "Today's agreement is a major milestone towards our target of using 100% renewable energy in our fertilizer production by 2027", OCP Group Chairman and CEO, Mostafa Terrab said. In his comments, Makhtar Diop, IFC Managing Director said, "IFC is proud to support OCP in its journey to reduce its carbon footprint, a strategy that will have long term positive effects in global food supply." UNCOVERED: Italian oil giant Eni’s African biofuels gamble is falling short. The company promised to produce thousands of tonnes of drought-resistant biofuel crops through partnerships with 6 African countries. The plan was to set up ‘agri-hubs’ in each country that would supply vegetable oil for its refineries, mainly by growing castor, which is advertised as being drought-resistant and suitable for planting on poor quality land. T&E led an investigation into the two most advanced: Kenya and the Republic of the Congo.  Eni’s targets are very ambitious: In Kenya alone, the company is betting on enrolling 400,000 small scale farmers to produce 200,000 tonnes a year by 2027. Our findings show that after several years, Eni has so far failed to produce the ‘miracle’ drought-resistant biofuels crops at scale. It has not even reached one quarter of its 2023 Kenyan production targets. In the Republic of the Congo, where it is partnering with Big agribusinesses, Eni’s projects have been languishing at the pilot stage for more than 18 months. On the ground interviews with Kenyan farmers notably show that poor yields, prolonged drought, and low buying prices have led to a dead end. Eni’s attempts to scale up production with ‘Big Agri’ in the Republic of Congo risks associating this project with allegations of land dispossession and environmental degradation.
