The architecture magazine «ARCH20» reports about the restoration of the old BRUGG HQ building in Switzerland: The high amount of asbestos pollution and the building’s poor energy balance were the reasons for the Fifties high-rise restoration, which was erected in 1956/57. The old administration and HQ office building had previously been valuable, but with a summer temperature of partly 34°C, it was difficult for office work. Many postwar buildings cause comparable issues and are demolished under the guise of densification, efficiency, or economy. However, the administration building was fortunate. It still looks – or looks as it did when it was erected. This is due to its municipal protected status, the sensitivity of the planners, and BRUGG Group’s readiness to put a little extra money in its palm as the building owner. Today, the oldest high-rise building in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland shines again in a “new” splendor and does so in a very sustainable way: After the renovation work, the building requires over 70% less energy! https://lnkd.in/dkGYzJ-f

Traditional office building designs are often enclosed, lacking in #porosity and #interactivity. Advocating #collaboration and #communication, our works are built to stimulate these attributes for the employees. Through utilising glass curtain walls and creating open #spaces, the #design allows #sunlight to penetrate the office area while enhancing energy #efficiency with natural sunlight #irrigation. Workspaces are connected through #terraces and #voids, creating #connected and #porous spaces to give employees a short break to recharge and remain #productive throughout the day. The #sustainable #biophilic designs not only add to the overall #aesthetic but contribute to making the space more comfortable and #flexible. To allow for effective communication, the complex also includes a conference centre for meetings and training, an experience centre for exhibitions and large-scale activities, ultimately creating an intricate design that advocates the idea of a live-work human-centric environment. Tasked with creating a landmark for the county’s premier technology estate, the vision was to attract leading high-tech and Research & Development companies, thereby crafting a new beacon for innovation in Cambridge. The approach: A two-building concept that redefines flexibility, catering to both single and multi-tenant occupancy. The design draws inspiration from the natural flow of the surrounding environment, featuring a sweeping colonnade that echoes the curve of the main spine road. This isn't just a design choice; it's a navigational guide. The spacing between columns widens as one approaches the main entrance, creating a welcoming gesture, while denser columns near the office areas provide a sense of protection and privacy. The beauty of this project lies in its seamless integration with nature and its surroundings, they're all in conversation with each other. Highly glazed façades ensure that the boundary between the indoor working environment and the lush landscaped setting is almost imperceptible. Daylight doesn't just enter these spaces; it floods them, thanks to the strategic placement of the entrance colonnade fins. Laid flat against the side elevations, these fins break the building mass into rhythmic smaller segments, enhancing the sense of openness and connectivity. The design achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, not only for its environmental performance but also for its contribution to the public realm. By creating a new space between the two buildings, they've not only given transparency to the architectural form but also underscored a commitment to sustainability. This design principle extends to the choice of the GEZE Slimdrive SCR curved automatic sliding door at the main entrance. Beyond its elegant aesthetics, this door system contributes to the building's thermal efficiency, minimizing energy loss and ensuring a comfortable transition from the bustling outside world into the serene, productive spaces within. This gateway to the Cambridge Science Park stands as a testament to what can be achieved when architectural ingenuity aligns with a sustainable ethos. The Power of Natural Light in Building Design ⚡ As we journey through an era of sustainability and wellness, the significance of integrating natural light into building design cannot be overstated. Natural light, a free and limitless resource, bestows numerous benefits to our built environments. From reducing energy consumption to enhancing occupant well-being, it serves as a catalyst for sustainable and human-centric design. First and foremost, the infusion of natural light reduces our dependence on artificial lighting and temperature control systems. Incorporating ample natural light also promotes human health and productivity. Employees in well-lit workspaces are more productive and content, while students in naturally lit classrooms perform better academically. 👨💻 👩💻 I remembered a couple of examples that I like: Apple Park, Cupertino, California: The Apple Park headquarters stands as a shining example of the transformative power of natural light in architectural design. Inside the building, employees enjoy an environment bathed in sunlight, which not only reduces energy consumption but also enhances productivity and creativity. Foster + Partners, Arup, OLIN The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich: The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, UK, is a testament to the harmonious marriage of art and architecture through the use of natural light. Its colossal glass facades effectively harness the beauty of natural light, creating a serene and inspiring atmosphere for art appreciation. Foster + Partners, Claude Engle, LANNY ROPER Montfort HQ office in Denver (photo below) project visualized by Render.bar. Designed by CIRCLE WEST ARCHITECTS. The structure comprises three levels of glass-encased office space, complemented by an inviting rooftop terrace and a ground-floor restaurant. At the heart of the design concept, and the central visualization challenge, lies the innovative use of dual-layered glass construction. As part of the future redevelopment of the ‘Espace Beaulieu’ office buildings, AG REAL ESTATE and Atenor, in collaboration with the BMA, are launching an #architecture #competition which aimed at transforming the existing buildings into a mixed, mostly residential complex. The ‘Espace beaulieu’ consists of 3 buildings covering a total surface area of approximately 39,000 m² above ground with a basement area measuring 23,000 m². It occupies a prime location in #Auderghem being located at one of the main entrances to Brussels, along the Herrmann-Debroux viaduct, which is to be demolished and transformed into an urban boulevard. Built in the early 90’ies, the buildings were occupied by the European Commission for almost 30 years until 2020. The Commission did not renew the leases of the buildings. The major reasons of this move are the "green deal" and the rising of hybrid working. The European Commission set up plans, by 2030, to reduce the number of occupied buildings in the Brussels Region from 50 to 25 and to leave all satellite sites outside the European and North district. In so doing, the Commission should reduce the total offices spaces occupied from 780,000 m² to 580,000 m2. Atenor acquired the buildings in 2019 with the original intention of extensively renovating these #office buildings to meet current energy standards and working practices. Since then, the owners, Atenor and AG Real Estate, have decided to change the expected use of these offices buildings and convert them mainly into #residential accommodation. The selection of the architectural firms will take place in 3 stages: submission of bids on 22 December 2023. Five to seven candidates will have the chance to participate in a second phase. For the 14th of February they will elaborate their vision in detail. Only in the final phase, 3 to 5 teams will be asked to elaborate their project into a sketch design which will be presented on the 3rd of April 2024 (a remuneration of € 15,000 will be awarded to candidates who submitted a full proposal in the third stage and were not selected as the final winners).
