🎭 2032 or 1932? Why Brisbane Olympics is a Laughing Stock! 🏟️ Brisbane’s plans for the smallest Olympics in over a century have been unveiled, sparking criticism and concern. The Queensland government's new images for the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre (QSAC) show a modest 40,000-capacity stadium, starkly contrasting with previous Olympic stadiums like the Stade de France and SoFi Stadium. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Minimalist Design: The QSAC features just one permanent covered grandstand with temporary seats, leading some to label Brisbane a "hillbilly town." 2️⃣ Missed Opportunities: A global design alliance, including local Brisbane architectural practice Buchan, Nikken Sekkei Ltd, and HKS, Inc., proposed modern, sustainable "legacy building" stadiums built from timber and featuring blended greenery. These designs could have created iconic, distinctly Australian stadiums. 3️⃣ Government Decisions: Queensland Premier Steven Miles rejected a $2.7 billion Gabba redevelopment and instead opted for retrofitting existing venues. This decision has drawn criticism for missing a "once in a generation" opportunity to elevate Brisbane's global profile. 📝 Highlighted by HKS Director Andrew Colling, the proposed timber-rich designs could have featured a parkland observation deck and a cocoon of timber and sandstone, creating something uniquely South East Queensland and distinctly Australian. 🔗 Learn more about Brisbane's controversial Olympic plans and the alternatives that could have set a new standard: https://lnkd.in/gjdzQ738 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can cities balance cost constraints with the need to create iconic and sustainable venues for global events like the Olympics? Membrane – stadium construction’s sustainable champion Football fans attending the final of the UEFA European Championships this summer can rest easy beneath the roof of Berlin’s Olympic Stadium come rain or shine, thanks to membrane experts Hightex Maintenance, as John Sheehan reports. Stadium building has been transformed in recent decades with the move from glass or opaque materials to the use of membrane. And membrane has helped to change the way the construction and architecture sectors think about building stadiums, allowing for more versatile and more environmentally friendly ways to construct or adapt major sporting venues. Berlin Olympic Stadium is one example. In 2004, Bavarian membrane pioneers Hightex GmbH installed a membrane roof onto the brutalist venue built for the 1936 Olympics to give it a new lease of life and protect spectators from the weather. The roof of the stadium is designed as a light cantilevering steel construction with an upper and lower membrane. The total length of the steel trusswork functioning as the main support is estimated at 68 metres and is visible through the translucent membrane. With proper care and regular maintenance, the membrane structures, which can consist of ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) or PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) are still in fantastic condition. Liam O'Connor, Training Manager at Hightex Maintenance, stressed the importance of carrying out this regular care and maintenance to keep the materials in tip-top shape: "I treat it like it’s a skin. If you look after your skin then the rest will be OK. Originally these structures were given a lifespan of 30 years, but we’ve been looking after a couple of roofs which are over 30 years old and still in fine condition. "All this started in the 1990s and a lot of these roofs are now supposed to be coming to the end of their lives, but if they’re properly looked after they could keep going for another 10 or 15 years. Nobody really knows because membrane as a working material has really only been around since the 1990s." 📈#MarketRoundup: White collars move into a white elephant Just 45 days after taking charge of Brazil’s second-largest football stadium, the Mané Garrincha in Brasília, Arena BSB, a consortium that won the bid to operate the facility (built for the 2014 World Cup), had to close the stadium’s doors because of the arrival of the Covid pandemic. “After four years of planning, the pandemic deprived us of the most important thing for our business: the people. In the meantime, we started using the stadium’s boxes as our offices because the place where we would originally be headquartered was being renovated,” Richard Dubois, Arena BSB CEO, tells The Brazilian Report. State of play. Currently, more than 5,000 square meters on the stadium’s third floor are occupied by companies in the events, communication, law, food, and financial technology sectors, says Rafael Roda, founder of real estate agency TRK Imóveis, who “shaped” the idea, that is, built the office business model in the stadium for Arena BSB. Today, around 700 people work at the stadium. Yes, but… Having an office in a stadium is not a perfect fit for just any company. Mr. Dibois explains that although they come from different industries, the companies that embraced the Esfera project have a flexible work culture. Why it matters. The idea brings recurring revenue for the stadium, giving it broader usage possibilities than such a facility would usually have. What could have become another white elephant from Brazil’s 2014 World Cup legacy is turning into a unique business.
