About US$3.7 billion a year is spent on mental health research worldwide. While that sounds like a big number, it’s equivalent to less than 50 cents per person. Because one in four people are affected by a mental disorder at some point in their lifetime, this mental health awareness week is a timely reminder that more investment into research is needed to help create a world with good mental health for all. In 2020, we published an extensive map revealing for the first time the extent and nature of mental health research funding around the world. We uncovered these trends: - Most mental health research funding is awarded by and spent in high-income countries - Research into mental health is underfunded compared to other (physical) diseases - Specific fields of mental health research – notably self-harm and suicide, eating, conduct, obsessive-compulsive and personality disorders – are relatively underfunded compared to other fields such as substance use and dependence, and depression - The majority of mental health research investment is on basic research, rather than clinical/applied research and - The young are not the focus of mental health research investments, despite anticipated long-term benefits of intervening at this age Read the full report here https://lnkd.in/guZN9Mc We’re working on a follow-up explore more recent changes to funding trends and outputs. Ada was tested by a team at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, involving a diverse group of users including psychotherapists, students, and laypersons. The study analyzed 20 different mental health cases, revealing some remarkable outcomes: 📈Correct diagnoses were identified in 58% to 79% of adult cases. 🔍 When considering additional possible diagnoses, accuracy improved to an outstanding 88% to 92%. 🤝 Ada’s diagnostic accuracy (Kappa=0.78) is on par with the level of agreement typically seen between two professional psychologists. ⏱️ The app completes detailed assessments in just 7 minutes. The insights and knowledge shared during this summit were truly inspiring, and I feel empowered to apply these learnings to my current studies and future practice in clinical psychology. Access to high-quality data is going to be the most important catalyst in advancing mental health treatment in the coming years. I’ve been honored to work with Patrick J. Kennedy at the Kennedy Forum as they chart the future of mental health treatment. Their 2033 90/90/90 goals aim high: 1️⃣ 90% of individuals will be screened for mental health and substance use disorders 2️⃣ 90% of those screened will have access to evidence-based treatment 3️⃣ 90% of those receiving treatment will have their symptoms effectively managed in recovery Achieving this demands robust, data-driven research. Fantastic to see this important commission, with a clear call to action to address youth mental health. Our National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) research has, similar to other countries, identified increasing rates of self-harm in young Irish people, an ongoing trend since 2010. We need to better understand the contributory factors to this trend in Ireland. One in four U.S. adults screened positively for depression, according to a new analysis from the COVID-19 and Life Stressors Impact on Mental Health and Well-Being (CLIMB) study. There were no significant differences among party affiliations, though the unmet need for treatment was highest among Republicans. The mental health conversation hasn't gone too far, but has it become too narrow? This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, our researchers Annie Irvine and Cassandra Lovelock share evidence from ongoing research that highlights the need for a more holistic approach to understanding and assessing work capability in the UK. Read more: Recent months have seen a series of policy statements highlighting the problem of economic inactivity due to long-term ill health, among which mental health problems make up a high proportion. These ministerial speeches have included accusations that we have a ‘sick note culture’, that people are having overexaggerated responses to the ‘everyday challenges and worries of life’, and suggestions that people with common mental health problems of anxiety and depression do not need the levels of benefit support currently being made available. At the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health, we are carrying out qualitative research investigating the ways in which people’s lived experience of distress shapes their interactions with work and the welfare system. This includes secondary analysis of archived research data, and new qualitative longitudinal research which is taking an in-depth lifecourse perspective on the interplay of work, welfare and mental health. Call for Papers Identifying Opportunities and Priorities in Youth Mental Health Disparities Research — Each manuscript will include a discussion on the gaps and opportunities in youth mental health disparities research; a discussion on approaches to reduce disparities among youth; and research strategies and solutions that can be implemented and evaluated to reduce youth mental health disparities.
