Unlocking the Future of Mining: Why Modernisation Can’t Wait I joined Chris Gibbs Stewart from Austmine and Sarah Coleman from idoba to explore the urgent need for modernisation in mining. As highlighted in ABB's latest report, which surveyed over 400 industry experts across five regions—including Australia—transformation in the mining sector is no longer optional. With nearly 50% of mining companies predicting significant or major changes to their operations, the message is clear: modernisation and digital transformation are essential for companies in the mining industry to achieve their decarbonization goals. The conversation with my peers was fruitful and engaging. Today the international conference MINEX - Mining and Exploration Forum in Prague started, associating companies from the mining sector, manufacturers and technology suppliers. Big thanks to Arthur Poliakov for organizing this meeting. In the first keynote speech Mark Rachovides from Euromines pointed out the main challenges for the european mining industry in the context of critical raw material act. It seems important at the moment to create a friendly environment for junior mining companies taking into account financing from EU funds and accelerating the issuance of consents in concession procedures, in order to achieve the ambitious goals included in the Critical Raw Material Act.

One of my favorite event of the year. 👇 Come see me to discuss #Simulation, #Optimization and #DigitalTwin of course, but also Value Chain Integrated Planning.
As the global mining industry continues to transform, we need a space to discuss how to innovate bridge technologies and processes, and move the industry forward. The 3rd Annual Digitalization in Mining North America conference will open the doors to these valuable conversations two weeks from now in Toronto from May 29th-30th. We’ll be there, will you? SimWell’s CEO, Alexandre Ouellet will be there to discuss mining improvements through a Value Chain Integrated Planning (VCIP) option. Let’s discuss chat at Booth #12 #DMNA2024 #DigitalTwinMineralProcessing #MinePlanning #MiningValueChain https://hubs.li/Q02wnJfl0

Very informative discussion on the importance of critical minerals to BC and Canada, between Bridgitte Anderson (President and CEO, Greater Vancouver Board of Trade) and Michael Goehring (President and CEO, Mining Association of BC), at the GVBOT luncheon last week. This followed an enlightening presentation by Michael on “Unlocking BC’s Critical Minerals Potential”, where he was eloquently introduced by Amber Johnston-Billings of Teck, the presenting sponsor. MIND THE GAP The energy transition can only happen with the transition metals the mining sector delivers. But the mining sector is a large energy consumer itself. So we need to enable it to scale up and clean up at the same time - with urgency. At the FT Live Mining Summit 2024 yesterday Andrew Hill, Alejandra Wood Huidobro, Doug Gurr, Adam Matthews and I discussed what's missing from existing frameworks to catalyse the decarbonisation of the sector? Some thoughts…. ⬅ ➡ Gap 1️⃣ - Avoided emissions GHG protocol does a great job of codifying accountability if your scope 3 footprint is upstream, but less so for sectors like mining with dominant downstream in-use footprint. However, in addition to absolute S1-3, Avoided Emissions (AE) is a relative measure that compares emissions from one product/system to another that provides equivalent function. So the strategic work on AE being led by WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development could fill that gap and drive innovation and collaboration for new technology in mining. 💡 Gap 2️⃣ Best available technology Future technology innovation will be part of the solution, but we don’t need to wait as some of the solution is already here. For example, around 25-30% of mining energy is consumed in the comminution circuit, the process of crushing rocks. A redesigned flowsheet, applying proven technologies in an innovative way, consumes around 40% less energy and can avoid up to 50% of CO2e emissions (https://lnkd.in/esjKtH86). So robust technical standards for valuation of sustainable process designs in the mining sector, combined with regulation to drive adoption of best available technology, could deliver material emissions reductions. ⚡ Gap 3️⃣ - Low carbon mine energy Some mine geographies get all their power from renewable sources, but a large proportion are either dependent on high-carbon grids or lack access to grid so have a dependency on diesel generation. A global strategic approach to investment in the decarbonisation of power grids/local energy supplies for regions producing energy transition minerals would enable simultaneous scale up and clean up. It would also create the additive social benefit of reliable energy supply to remote, often under provisioned, communities. All of the above would enable more robust and transparent decision making for transition finance - and where better for transition finance to invest in projects than the sector who's end products will enable the low-carbon energy transition

The reopening of the Mindarie Mineral Sands Project introduces a new business model where every ore deposit extracted is already sold, ensuring stability over the uncertainty of the open market. To accommodate our larger operations, we have upgraded our processing facilities, enhanced mining capabilities, and nearly doubled the size of our mining camp, allowing us to mine more efficiently than ever before. Got a question? We’d love to hear from you!
