Brand integrity/trust with your Key Stakeholders (shoppers, suppliers, investors) is vitally important to a retailer's ongoing success. Latest Roy Morgan research shows a drop in brand trust ratings for both Coles and Woolworths. "Long-running concerns about the cost of living, coupled with accusations of price gouging and a raft of inquiries to the commercial activities of the supermarket sector have seen Coles move from Australia's fifth most trusted brand in December 2023, to the ninth most distrusted brand by March 2024. Over the same time period, Woolworths slipped from 2nd on the list of most trusted brands, to 34th,"according to the Roy Morgan data. IMHO to rebuild brand trust (reputation) and team spirit, leaders need to embark upon a back to basics focus, especially of their physical stores. This is the moment when Woolworths Supermarkets CEO Amanda Bardwell came face to face with university student Megan Guy who asked her how she sleeps at night amid accusations Woolworths misled the public with deceptive discount tactics. Is this another “Brad Banducci moment” for Woolworths? (The now infamous walkout by the previous CEO during a TV interview). Megan and a friend approached Bardwell at Woolworths Warrawong in the NSW Illawarra region, recorded the interaction and posted it to TikTok a few days ago. Bardwell (and her minders) come across as defensive and abrasive, and predictably follow the corporate PR spin by “staying on message”. OK, so I get that CEOs tread a fine line with these things and the safest path is to stick to the PR script. But (and it’s a big but!) corporate leaders should show more empathy, humanity and compassion rather than act like corporate automatons. Especially if you’re running one of the largest grocery businesses in the country at a time when households are suffering under a severe cost-of-living crisis. And you’re also the focus of a ACCC enquiry. For me, this is a big fail and a huge missed opportunity for Bardwell, and will only reinforce the public’s view that CEOs of large corporates are out-of-touch with public sentiments. What do you know?!?! 🤔 September marks 4 months since I made the transition into the Commercial team at Food People, and this for sure has been a BIG learning curve for me!😨 From the many different brands and SKU's, to the intricacies of each channel and how every position plays a key part in filling our shelves 📦 🍪 🧀 Did you know... 🍊 Modern Trade is the most expensive channel for businesses as they must invest in order to get that prime shelf space! 🍊 Some of the biggest food manufacturers sell a portion of their stock to supermarkets to be used for their private labelled goods, e.g. milk - It's actually the same product!! 🍊 There are people (Shopper Marketeers) who study our behaviours in a supermarket such as the direction we walk, which aisles we visit first and average time spent shopping and use this to recommend prime product positioning and feasibility! After eight years as CEO of the Swiss maker of Nespresso coffee and Purina pet foods, Schneider will be replaced by Latin America chief Laurent Freixe, Nestle said late Thursday. The news came as a surprise given that Schneider was scheduled to appear at three different events next week, including a Barclays “fireside chat” promoted hours before the announcement. Schneider is not alone. Just last week, Laxman Narasimhan lost his job as CEO of Starbucks Corp. after less than two years; he’ll be replaced by Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. chief Brian Niccol. Estee Lauder Cos. CEO Fabrizio Freda plans to retire in 2025, after the cosmetics company ran into trouble in recent months. Completed the BIG 6 ticked off my list!! Having now launched FMCG brands into all of the major full-choice supermarkets, including Morrisons who have just got NICE nationally 🍷 So what works to cut through with the supermarkets? I always look for successful partnerships centred around the 4 C's (that became clear to me when working at Cadbury all of those years ago): 1. Category - will this help them grow incremental sales, tapping into macro trends, that help to future proof growth. For wine this is about attracting the next generation of adults into the category by using brands, formats and relevant marketing. 2. Consumer - is there a set of consumers that their range isn't fulfilling the need for. I.e. younger adults aren't being recruited into wine as they find it confusing, stuffy and intimidating. Brands like NICE help to break down these barriers. 3. Commercials - how does this stack up commercially to ensure margin accretive opportunities are delivered, whilst mitigating the risk that stock will sit there gathering dust on shelves. 4. Catalyst - bringing to life all of the brand DNA magic, that has proven time and time again to compliment own label ranges, invigorate categories and help to innovate to make the shopper experience more exciting. Now onto the second part of the equation in getting the product off the shelves. Ever wondered what big brand allyship looks like? This week Woolworths, their subsidiary Big W, and the German supermarket chain Aldi have announced they will not be stocking 'Australia Day' products this year. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Kmart stopped selling these products in 2023. They weren't forced to close, they didn't loose all their customers, the country didn't implode. When a big brand or large corporate make these decisions, it isn't a spur of the moment thought. They know they will face public and shareholder backlash, potential reputational damage or even politicians wading in to stir up negative sentiment. I applaude every person involved in making this happen - especially those who were uncomfortable with it and the allies that brought them across the line.
