It is with mixed emotions that I share that my last day with the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board will be on July 9. More to share on my future opportunity later, but I want to express my appreciation for the two Boards of Directors I've served for their support, their vision and their dedication to making life better for people in the Calgary Metropolitan Region.
I would also like to thank the two Board Chairs I had the opportunity to work with, @Chris Sheard and Greg Clark MBA ICD.D. I learned a tremendous amount from both about board governance, setting up a corporation and finding common ground among disparate viewpoints. Both of these gentlemen always supported me in doing the right thing, even when it was not the popular choice.
Lastly, I would like to thank the team of dedicated, creative and amazing professionals whom I had the pleasure to work with at the CMRB. Liisa Tipman, Jaime Graves, Shelley Armeneau, JP Leclair and Scott Humphrey. The work of the CMRB is critical to the long term sustainability of the Region. This team of professionals has set up the member municipalities for collaboration in key areas such as water stewardship, regional transit and transportation planning and regional economic development, among so many others. Their work on the Growth and Servicing Plans will see reduced land consumption, water consumption and GHG emissions as well as saving municipalities on the cost and amount of infrastructure.
Regional planning is not an easy task. It requires municipalities to think differently, to change how they plan and to view decisions through a different lens. These are all immediate changes, and the benefits will not be seen for years or decades to come. In short, there is no reward for making hard but necessary decisions now, only future residents of the Region will see the benefit.
This work is difficult, and it is critical to the long term success of the Region we call home. I am privileged to have been a part of this organization.
