How can we design cities and places that are safer and more inclusive for all, including women and girls? Last Thursday, London Legacy Development Corporation launched its ‘Creating Places that Work for Women and Girls’ Handbook, developed in collaboration with Arup. This handbook seeks to ensure that places are designed to be equitable for everyone. London Legacy Development Corporation is the first Local Planning Authority that has fully mainstreamed gender-informed design and planning processes, and the first organisation in the UK to publish such guidelines. But it’s critically important to know the difference since some Coastal approvals can be taken care of during permitting; others can take 12-, 15-, or 18-plus months to complete. PCC Director Chloe Parker has been asked to explain the Los Angeles Coastal Zones and the various processes at a Zoom event this Thursday night hosted by the Association for Women in Architecture + Design (AWA+D). The lived experiences and needs of those we design and build for can too often differ from how decision makers, developers, contractors, architects, planners, and engineers may believe people live their lives." #ArupUniversity has collaborated with Social Broadcasts, decosm, and residents from marginalised communities in two areas of London (Newham and Thamesmead) to undertake #research exploring how communities experience, engage with, and are affected by the #builtenvironment. This research is presented in ‘Racial Equity and the City: Experiences of People of Colour in London’. It identifies the need to prioritise #urbaninclusion in the built environment, and it recommends working with communities guided by #participatorydesignprinciples. It is shortly to be irresponsible to fail to consider Passive House for schools.

When it comes to public projects—whether that be municipal, provincial or federal— accountability to the public must be a pre-eminent priority. After all, public projects do not belong to any particular government, but to the citizens they are meant to serve. In Ontario, as in many other places across North America, this accountability often takes the shape of public consultations. The value of these sessions can be immense, providing opportunities throughout design and approvals to incorporate feedback, answer questions, and address community priorities. However, not all consultations result in effective engagement. When accountability is not baked into the process, these sessions can become purely procedural, with little to no impact on a design’s evolution. Equally as detrimental, when weighed too heavily towards one group, they can result in echo chambers that do not represent the wider voices of the community. So how do we ensure the public engagement process is truly meaningful, effective, and democratic? Are there ways we can shape the process to ensure it becomes a true dialog between the community, designers, and government? If we analyse how we’re actually behaving in spaces and link that with insights and challenges, we can actually make a lot more of what we have and create an opportunity. 3. The real power of reflection and research on what we’ve already done. There’s been a huge power of investment across Scotland in very different ways but to go back in and understand the student experience, the teacher experience, the designer experience, and then not just capture it but reflect on it, review it, get underneath it - ask the questions so we can improve the briefing and the performance.
