On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare the end of the Civil War and announce the emancipation of all enslaved people. This pivotal event occurred two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The delay stemmed from the fact that the Emancipation Proclamation could not be enforced in areas still under Confederate control. It wasn't until Union forces gained control of Texas that freedom was granted to the last remaining enslaved African Americans. On this Juneteenth, I am remembering that freedom has never been given. The oppressors did not suddenly come to a moral realization or recognition of our humanity. Neither did the emancipation proclamation develop out of altruism. We have been freeing ourselves for centuries through a variety of means including uprisings, political influence, building community, advocacy, education, creativity, ingenuity, ownership, and individual/collective healing- the aptitude for all of which, we have always had. It's important to note that "slave" (a term succeeded by other terms in the white body lexicon to dehumanize) was the identity African bodies were made to believe and accept about themselves. The role and presence of African bodies in the global and historical context is so much greater and more important than the 250-400 years of white body American history. Though held captive for a time, it is a tale to think our identity was ever anything other than fully human and inherently free. It's important because when we know who we are and supposed to be, anything else that is imposed on us becomes foreign and we learn to resist with every ounce of our being. I celebrate Juneteenth today in honor of our perpetual resistance and the ancestors who show us the way. It is a day truly of our own meaning making.

Two Hundred Forty Eight years ago, a group of men whom believed in freedom, borders, language, culture and the self evident rights of man granted by our God above, set out and signed the Declaration of Independence . At that time and place in history, they and their fellow “countrymen” had been abused by an ever powerful, greedy, central government which created nothing yet expected all in return. A government which suppressed and usurped the values held by these founders and their countrymen. A government which taxed endlessly to grow an empire which did not return the spoils of war to its peoples. A government that suppressed religious practices of Christian men and women. This was two hundred forty eight years ago. Our Founding Fathers who signed this great Declaration of Independence, pledging their lives, reputations and fortunes to the cause of freedom, would be likely be appalled today at what the country they created has become. Over the course of decades past, we the people have given away our inalienable rights in return for an ever growing federal government which is larger, more imposing and more suppressive than the monarchy which our Founding Fathers gave all to overthrow. The Borders, Language and Culture which created a blessed nation seem to have vanished with the sands of time thus being replaced by the divide and conquer schemes of a corrupt, two party government and the ever growing power of a non democratic, unelected administrative State. Where do we go from here? Can our grand experiment started two hundred and forty eight years ago be revived? Can the inalienable rights of man and the virtues of a the republic be espoused once again, thus restoring our nation to her God intended greatness? These are the questions I ponder on this anniversary of our American Independence. Thoughts, actions, consequences , accountability and restoration, these are the key words on my mind.
