New Schools for New Orleans’ Post

On a Friday in April at KIPP Morial School, Ms. Markuisha Patton stood beneath large letters taped across the front wall of her Social Studies classroom: Time ripples today’s waves. Together, Ms. Patton and her eighth-graders have taken a critical eye to history–to see the way the past ripples forward to the present. They’ve concluded the end of the year, and they’ve made their way through a rigorous social studies curriculum that Ms. Patton wrote. This fall, Ms. Patton and educators in classrooms at roughly 75% of schools citywide started using the new, more rigorous materials. She’s found that while the material is more challenging, her students were more engaged. This resulted in increased outcomes amongst her classes. Take a look at the curriculum in action!
