I see an increasing amount of reference to DEI, both in private business as well as university settings. This long (1:05) podcast that features Azim Shariff who has developed a taxonomy useful in understanding the differing motivations among those charged with university hiring and hence, de facto DEI. It can be quite nuanced and frustratingly vague at times, but is never-the-less a useful look at an attempt to understand and tame what has become a somewhat divisive acronym. https://lnkd.in/g93ytNcV

There is certainly a case to be made for and against foreign branches of universities but they can sometimes offer great opportunities for international students who are not ready to leave the country just yet or who can no longer afford the international cost of attendance at prominent American and UK universities. Make sure to listen to the Freakonomics three-episode series on American colleges for a more in-depth view of the advantages or disadvantages of college satellites on the the link: https://lnkd.in/gQ_wwybz #college #university #applications #podcast #Freakonomics #Greece

Thanks Marcela! Md Ulfat Tahsin, this is the podcast I was talking about. This is a fantastic podcast with great big picture ideas about the general PhD structure and issues PhD students face. Highly recommend having a listen. Especially valuable since the writer of the book is in the humanities. It gives a good perspective on how similar and different things are outside of engineering. #phd #phdlife #engineeringeducation
Interesting podcast. Will have to checkout Len Cassuto's book. Rafael De Leon, they talked about the graduate student as a laborer as well. I really liked some of the ideas Jeff Selingo shares at the end. https://lnkd.in/grJEkHVp
