Signs that a child may be being exploited include receiving unexplained and expensive gifts, having new and significantly older friends, changes in mood, regularly going missing from school or home, and being secretive with their electronic devices. Laws in 3 States: • California: Solicitation of a minor is a felony, punishable by up to 3 years in prison. • Texas: Solicitation for sex or trafficking can lead to 2-20 years in prison, depending on the case. • New York: Solicitation of prostitution is a misdemeanor, with penalties of up to 1 year in jail. Supporting the Families Left Behind: A Call for Compassionate Policing... In the wake of any crime, it’s not only the direct victims who suffer but also the innocent families of those who commit these acts. The stigma, vilification, and emotional burden placed on these families can be overwhelming. They have done absolutely nothing wrong, yet they are often berated and ostracised simply due to association. It's crucial that every police force in the UK recognises the need for dedicated liasion officers to support the families of offenders. These families are left to pick up the pieces, and without the right help, the cycle of trauma, isolation, and frustration continues. Having officers specifically trained to work with these families can: 🔸 Help reduce future reoffending 🔸 Foster better communication and trust with law enforcement 🔸 Address the disdain many feel towards the police 🔸 Break down the stigma and misunderstanding that surrounds families of offenders This isn't just about offering a helping hand—it's about building a more compassionate and understanding system that looks beyond the crimes and supports all those affected. By providing this support, we can make significant strides in breaking down barriers and building a safer, more united society. Sexual violence is the most underreported crime. According to RAINN, less than 20% of female victims report their assault report to the police. According to NSVRC, over 90% of sexual violence on college campuses in the U.S. go unreported. Victims of sexual violence don’t report for many reasons: shame, stigma, not being believed, difficulty proving a case, revictimization in the process, outdated laws, and more.
