🌈 Investing in LGBTQIA+ Health: The Power of Social Connection 🌈 At Oceanview Mental Health and Wellness, we recognize that true health goes beyond medical and mental health care - it requires safe environments, supportive relationships, and a sense of belonging. This echoes the Surgeon General's recent warning highlighting how loneliness and social isolation can profoundly impact health, especially within LGBTQIA+ communities. The Eidos LGBTQ+ Health Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania sheds light on critical disparities faced by LGBTQIA+ folks, including heightened levels of loneliness and isolation compared to the general population. These challenges often lead to chronic health conditions, mental health issues, and increased suicidality. Despite progress in social acceptance, LGBTQIA+ folks continue to experience marginalization and discrimination, limiting their access to vital social resources. This underscores the importance of fostering inclusive environments and supportive networks. Key Takeaways: Social Connection is Vital: Health relationships play a crucial role in reducing health disparities and promoting well-being among LGBTQIA+ folks. Intersectionality Matters: Addressing social disconnection requires understanding and addressing intersecting aspects of identity, such as age, race, disability, sexuality, and gender identity. Shifting to Social Solutions: To create meaningful change, we must prioritize social solutions that foster inclusion and empathy. Promoting Prosocial Solutions: Investing in initiatives that promote social inclusion and trust can lead to significant improvements in LGBTQ+ health. Maximizing Impact: Collaboration and scalable interventions are key to bridging gaps and promoting lasting change in LGBTQ+ health disparities. Together, let's continue to advocate for inclusive practices and support systems that empower LGBTQ+ individuals to thrive. By prioritizing social connection, we can create healthier, more resilient communities where everyone has the opportunity to flourish. Pansexual and Panromantic Awareness and Visibility Day is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the identities, experiences, and contributions of pansexual and panromantic individuals. It's a day to raise awareness about the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly focusing on those who identify as pansexual or panromantic. Visibility and awareness days like this help combat stigma, foster understanding, and promote inclusivity. They provide platforms for education, support, and empowerment for those within the pansexual and panromantic communities and beyond. It's also an opportunity for allies to show their solidarity and amplify the voices of those who often face marginalization or erasure.

Last year, the NHPCO Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) published research exploring perceptions of hospice care among African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, and LGBTQ+ communities. This survey of 1,200 people is part of the NHPCO DAC’s commitment to health equity; to understanding hospice through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); and to breaking down breaking down barriers to accessing hospice and palliative care through knowledge sharing, data collection, and collaborative discussion. Along with key research findings, the Hospice Through the DEI Lens report offers recommendations for hospice providers to help increase understanding of hospice care and help overcome barriers to access. As part of #blackhistorymonth, we’ll be highlighting some of findings of this research and recommendations to act based on these findings. View the full report: nhpco.org/diversity
