IBF were delighted to attend last week's ESG in Food Summit in the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise organised by Agri Insider. The event set the landscape for the challenges and opportunities for Irish food companies as they navigate the ESG regulations that is changing food production. Key themes such as CSRD, energy efficiency, sustainable procurement and waste management practices, the latest technologies, real world best practice and financial considerations were discussed amongst expert speakers. Key messages from the summit were that consumer transparency is going to play a crucial role, what will our approach to food waste look like and while there is a concerted effort to decarbonise the food sector in Ireland, economics for primary food producers is still a key issue.

⚖️ Why was nobody talking about offsetting during #Chocoa? 💸 Not so long ago, most companies in the cocoa or chocolate industry would mention offsetting as part of their climate strategy: either selling carbon credits generated by their farmers, or purchasing credits to compensate for their emissions. 📉 None of the cocoa and chocolate companies that I spoke to at Chocoa even mentioned offsets this year. Clearly offsetting has lost its appeal for the sector. I think this is for three reasons: 1️⃣ All large cocoa and chocolate companies have committed to the Science-Based Targets initiative, which requires them to reduce 90-95% of their (supply-chain) emissions. Offsets (removals) can only be used to neutralize the final 5-10% hard-to-abate emissions. 2️⃣ The upcoming GHG Protocol Land Sector & Removals Guidance makes it clear that companies have to deduct any carbon benefits associated with offsets sold in their supply-chain from their own GHG target accounting - meaning there is no benefit, really. 3️⃣ Under the new EU Green Claims directive, companies can no longer claim ‘carbon neutrality’ based solely on offsets. I’m excited to see the market moving towards what I have always believe is the only way we can make cocoa and coffee climate positive: by rewarding farmers in our own supply-chains for reducing emissions. #cocoa #chocolate #coffee #climate #sbti #netzeto

We have seen first-hand how the producer groups we work with have initiated a range of projects aimed at mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change, strengthening the ability of smallholder farmers to protect their futures in an era of #climatecrises. These include: 🌡 Training in climate resilience strategies 📃 Compliance with #EUDR 💧 #IrrigationManagement 🌲 #Reforestation. Such initiatives extend beyond agriculture, promoting environmental sustainability across each of the regions we work. In November, Fairtrade International announced a positive step to support farmers: their new partnership with Satelligence. This collaboration will help to scale up satellite monitoring of forested areas and farms belonging to all Fairtrade-certified cocoa and coffee producer organisations globally. The initiative aims to connect Fairtrade co-operatives with data on their members’ farms and their deforestation risks, so they can share this data with their commercial partners and better manage forest landscapes. The partnership will also support producer organisations – representing more than one million coffee and cocoa farmers cultivating 2.5 million hectares – to meet EUDR requirements so they can maintain access to important markets. You can read more about deforestation monitoring and how co-operatives are introducing innovative technologies to build their #climateresilience, in our latest member magazine: ➡ https://lnkd.in/ekEPSVe5 🌍 Learn more about our vital work: www.shared-interest.com #investinafairerworld #forjusticenotprofit #fairtrade #financewithahumanface

International 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞, 29th of September. Attention for this topic is highly needed as 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 produced gets wasted somewhere along the food chain. To make this tangible, we're talking about 37kg of food per person that is thrown away every year. At Möbius, we believe that we can have true impact by working on this topic. That's why we spend quite some time on it, to name a few of our projects: the working agenda circular food, the Good Food strategy in Brussels, the Flemish food strategy, the training program 'circular advantages in the food chain' and our guidance of private companies in reducing their impacts. Last week at Food Waste Fest with FoodWIN, we heard Thibault Geerardyn from Rikolto sharing a good argument to start working on it too: "Reducing food waste is a very important measure to stop climate change. We are at a tipping point, where it's cheaper to do something about it than to pay the consequences." How do you tackle this issue in your organisation?

Krill: A small solution to big global challenges - reflections from the Clinton Global Initiative 2024 President Bill Clinton led our roundtable discussion on the world's most urgent challenges at Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting. I used this opportunity to highlight the crucial role seafood, especially krill, can play in addressing these issues. 🦐 Negative and often misleading views about seafood seem to dominate today's discourse. Yet, policymakers and global leaders must listen to the facts. At Aker BioMarine ASA, we harvest around 350,000 tons of krill annually—well within the conservative 1% quota. Science tells us that this could sustainably be increased to 1.5 million tons, making it the fifth largest and still most sustainable fishery in the world🌊 What does this mean? More healthy food on the table and a critical contribution toward a sustainable future. Krill and other seafood have a significantly lower CO2 footprint than land-based foods. Increasing seafood consumption could be one of the most effective ways to help meet the targets of the Paris Agreement. It's time we shift the conversation. If we are serious about tackling climate change, we need to embrace seafood and krill as sustainable, nutritious, and climate-smart food sources. 🤝 Sigrid van Aken, CEO, Postcode Lottery Group, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President, Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Ziv Aviram, Founder and President, Aviram Foundation, Richard Dickson, President and CEO, Gap Inc., Tony Elumelu, Chairman, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group, Lynn Forester De Rothschild, Founder and CEO, Inclusive Capitalism, Nili Gilbert, CFA, CAIA, Vice Chairwoman, Carbon Direct, Ilan Goldfajn, President, IADB, Rolando Gonzalez Bunster, Chairman & CEO, Interenegy, Katie Hobbs, Governor, Arizona, Kathy Hochul, Governor, New York, Francine Katsoudas, Executive Vice President and Chief People, Policy & Purpose Officer, Cisco, Andrew Kuper, CEO, LeapFrog Investments, Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister, Barbados, José Raúl Mulino, President, Panama, Gavin Newsom, Governor, California Denis O'Brien, Founder, Digicel, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala GCON, Director-General, World Trade Organization, Salma Okonkwo, CEO, Blue Power Energy, John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate, Michael Regan, Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Bill Rudin, Co-Executive Chairman, Rudin Management Company Brandon Sawalich, President and CEO, Starkey Hearing Technologies Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary, United Nations Climate Change Secretariat
