In industrial bioprocessing the generation of foam and resultant risk of filter blockages limit the maximum volume of the culture, and thus restrict the product output per batch. Research carried out in the Cell Technology Group by James Flynn and Laura Breen under Principal Investigator, Michael Butler investigated the use of antifoaming agents. This work formed part of a two-year Enterprise Ireland funded project in collaboration with Canty.   This study, published in Biotechnology Progress, showed the value of optical monitoring system (LabCam) for measuring foam generation and dissipation in a bioreactor to assess the efficiency of antifoam agents to reduce foam in a bioreactor. Conclusions from the paper include; 1.The LabCam system provided a novel optical method for at-line monitoring of the dissipation of foam in a bioreactor 2.The technology showed significant potential as an added tool in the development of bioprocesses particularly in situations where foam generation could occur, for example at high cell densities or high protein concentrations where there might be a demand for enhanced gas sparging or culture agitation.
