Undetectable equals Untransmittable (#u=u) means that under effective HIV therapy, the virus cannot be sexually transmitted. 💊 A recent multi-country HIV survey across #austria, #greece and #switzerland explored public awareness, understanding and acceptance of U=U. 🔬 The results clearly showed a limited recognition of U=U in all three countries. Four notes about why National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is so important: 1. In the 90s, women were told that they didn't need to worry about HIV. But if they tested positive, they were judged, often denied care & punished. 2. Today, women are often excluded from the HIV response and told that it is a "gay men's disease." However, HIV is a sexually transmitted infection that can and does affect anyone. 3. HIV is a disease of poverty but the field often acts like treatment is the only thing that matters all while ignoring what people have to do to survive―which often leads to them acquiring HIV. 4. If we addressed these issues, viremia & HIV rates would plummet―especially among women. I learned all of this from Patricia Nalls at a conference, two years ago. After losing her husband and daughter to AIDS and being diagnosed with the condition herself, Nalls founded The Women's Collective―an organization that helps women living with HIV and protects people who are HIV possible from acquiring the virus. My 1st job in the Pharmaceutical Industry was a Therapeutic Specialist, working on Viral diseases, among them HIV/AIDS; Now, I am happy because people can live with HIV!!! Every 1st of December, World AIDS Day is marked all over the world. But for us at Gilead every day is World Aids Day. All of us encounter in our life unfair behaviors due to a stigma related to a characteristic which is a part of the core of who we are: our gender, religion, background, race, or the country we are coming from. It hurt us and we felt the injustice of the behaviors we received. Please remember this feeling the next time you fear shaking the hand of a man or women living with HIV or reluctant to give a medical examination or provide a service to a woman with HIV. And know that your fear is based on stigmas, not on facts. I encourage us all to learn one new thing about HIV that will erase the stigma that unfortunately still exists. Learn what is the meaning of a person living with HIV who is Undetectable or check out how pregnant women with HIV can give birth to healthy babies. Let the stigma about people with HIV go by learning the facts. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of people with HIV. We've seen a decrease in new infections and an improvement in the quality of life for those living with HIV. 🤝 But there's still a lot of work to do. Stigma and discrimination are still major barriers, preventing people from getting tested, seeking treatment, and finding support. We need to keep pushing for comprehensive sex education, affordable healthcare, and the end of prejudice. 🔬 On this World AIDS Day, let's also acknowledge the importance of research and innovation.
