💫 Today we celebrate the adoption of the United Nations Charter. 💠 After two shattering world wars, 50 nations came together to revive, strengthen and amplify the spirit of the League of Nations. The United Nations Charter was adopted in 1945 with an intense aspiration for peace, prosperity and human rights. 🌸 It was a sincere initiative, driven by human beings, anchored in the deep individual and collective values of a generation that had suffered the ravages of conflict. 🔵 How do I know? My Dad told me. He was there as a young diplomat, representative of Ethiopia, in the early years of the establishment of this new international organization that would provide the mechanisms to preserve peace and create prosperity. He told me stories of real people, their passion and hard work to make this happen. With other diplomats he later contributed to the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Thanks to what I learned from him, the origins of the UN are not an abstraction for me, but tales of lived experience. 🔷 Has the United Nations lived up to its aspirations? Not always from a political perspective for sure. The nations of the world need to do much more to empower this organization to achieve its goals of peace and prosperity. But the various agencies and programs constantly accomplish a lot to better the world. Imagine a world without the work of the humanitarian programs like UNICEF or the international treaties signed through technical agencies like ITU. 🔷 As always, it's easy to criticize, but let's remember that the United Nations is still the only place where all nations can engage in global conversations about the state of the world, it's all we've got really. And these conversations often yield good outcomes although we rarely hear about them in the news. 🔷 The UN might seem like something far away from your daily life, not your concern, but look at the state of the world, today it is more important than ever to strengthen this organization that protects our rights as global citizens to live a decent, safe, and hopefully thriving existence. 🔴 We can start by simply acknowledging the importance of the adoption of the United Nations Charter, certainly a momentous promise made to world! Follow the link in UNOG's post below and just read the Preamble, it says it all. Then share it, and talk about it with your friends. 🧡 Have a great and inspiring day! "We the Peoples of the United Nations..." On this day, 79 years ago, the United Nations Charter was adopted. 50 nations came together in San Francisco to create a new organization for peace, prosperity and human rights. The values of the Charter resonate as strongly today as they did in 1945. https://lnkd.in/e3WphD8

Juneteenth is an important day in American history, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were now free. This announcement came over two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which had officially abolished slavery in the confederate states. As we mark this significant milestone, it is essential to remember that the fight for freedom and justice for all continues. Juneteenth serves as a reminder that progress can be slow and uneven and that we must remain vigilant in our efforts to combat systemic racism and discrimination. At Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, my team is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment where everyone feels valued and respected and advocating for ongoing change. We recognize that diversity and inclusion are essential to our success and a culture of belonging allows our team to be seen, heard, and valued. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us continue our commitment to promoting equality and justice for all. Together, we can build a better future for ourselves and future generations 💙 #Juneteenth #Freedom #Justice #Diversity #Inclusion #Belonging

On Native American Heritage Day, we recognize the invaluable contributions of Native peoples that have shaped our country and honor the hundreds of Tribal Nations who continue exercising their inherent sovereignty as vital members of the overlapping system of governments in the United States. We also recommit to supporting Tribal sovereignty; upholding the Federal Government's solemn trust and treaty responsibilities; and working in partnership with Tribal Nations to advance prosperity, dignity, and safety for all Native peoples. Since time immemorial, Native communities have passed down rich cultures, knowledge, traditions, and ways of life. But throughout our history, Native peoples' cultures, identities, and governments were not always seen as a part of this Nation but as a threat to it. Native people were pressured to assimilate, banned from practicing their traditions and sacred ceremonies, and forced from their homes and ancestral homelands. This violence and devastation cost countless lives, tore families apart, and caused lasting damage to Tribal communities and institutions. Despite centuries of violence and oppression, Native peoples remain resilient and proud. Today, Native Americans are essential to the fabric of the United States. They serve in the United States Armed Forces at higher rates than any other ethnic group. They continue to steward so many of our great lands. Their contributions to science, humanities, arts, public service, and more have brought prosperity for all of us. Their diverse cultures and communities continue to thrive and lead us forward. #nativeamericanheritage #irem #iremnyc #diversity #equity #inclusion

✊🏾 Staying true to our core value, “defenders first, always,” the visual theme of UAF A&P’s Strategic Plan 2024-2029 is the portrayal of an alternate vision of the world that women, trans, and non-binary human rights defenders are trying to create. 🦆 It is inspired by mythical shapeshifters and animals whose bodies and collective movements adapt and defend in creative and resourceful ways in their resilience against (climate) change. 🤓 Have you read it yet? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gmM89XEr
