💥 💥 Discover the innovative methods in utility pipe installation and rehabilitation. Trenchless excavation. As the demand for sustainable infrastructure continues to grow, the civil engineering community needs to adopt innovative methods that offer advantages over traditional trenching techniques to install and maintain undergrounds utilities. Problems with Traditional trenching 1. Extensive Excavation. Excavation requires large scale digging, which disrupts landscapes, roadway and existing infrastructure. 2. High cost and time. This involves significant labour, time and material cost. 3. Environmental impact. Excavation leas to environmental disruption, including damage to ecosystems and increased carbon footprint. 4. Traffic disruption. In light of these factors, it is encouraged that we adopt innovation in installation and rehabilitation of utility pipes. Here are some of the benefits of trenchless excavation. 1. Environmental protection 2. Cost savings 3. Minimal Traffic Disruption. 4. Improved infrastructure longevity. 🚀Embracing Trenchless technologies deliver efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solutions for infrastructure needs. Through tailoring custom-engineered solutions across diverse projects from buoyancy control and pipeline supports, to coating protection, we've tackled everything from the largest pipelines in the Western Hemisphere to the challenging terrain of the Athabasca oil sands. This team in Illinois faced the challenge of installing a 16-inch pipeline under a railway through fractured flagstone, where conventional protection methods like concrete coating or wood lagging weren’t enough to handle the abrasive rock bore. Designed to absorb abrasion and impact through deformation, PipeDefender® engineered pipeline lagging delivered superior protection taking on any damage while fully protecting the pipe as it passed through. Find over 40 projects and case studies on our website for proven pipeline protection https://lnkd.in/dYeZQZp "𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞." Last month we spoke about our pipeline construction Pre-Planning and Proposal Stage. This month, we're focusing on the Execution Stage, where we take everything we prepared and put it into action. This is often the busiest Stage in any project, with many factors to consider and implement, including: ➡️ Development, submission, and adoption of project-specific planning ➡️ Temporary/permanent access and crossing construction ➡️ Topsoil removal and sequestration ➡️ Water channel management ➡️ Hauling, stringing, bending, gauging, welding, and coating of all pipe This frequently has to take place over hundreds of kilometres of land. I thought for this post I would discuss a project I did some years ago. It was the replacement of a very high pressure slurry pipeline though the main streets of a midlands town, under a mainline railway sat on embankment and onwards to a cement plant. As the head of underground works I led the design and we had quite a long section of directional drilling to avoid disrupting the main commuter routes. When it came to the railway the solution was proposed was quite a technical pipe jack though an embankment of unknown quality. So when going on site I had a gander at both sides of the embankment, envisioning the challenges of not tripping up the trains going over the pipe jack some 30m away from the current route through a small underbridge packed with utilities and the current pipeline. In chatting with the works manager he mentioned a planned plant shutdown for two weeks in about six months. A germ of an idea developed and the final solution was to take advantage of the shutdown replace the section of pipe within the roadway of the underbridge and enable future connection of the new pipeline either side and avoiding the pipe jack. Sometimes the safest tunnelling solution is to design out the tunnel. I used to use this as an example for new graduates when describing pipe jacking and directional drilling and giving them an exercise to design the solution. All the same information I had including the two week shutdown and underbridge cross section showing the utilities. They were generally surprised that on a tunnelling course the best solution wasn’t a tunnel. So I would always recommend having a critical friend when developing your solutions to ask the difficult questions such as why tunnel or bridge just because it was initially a good idea. Sometimes just turning left for a bit works.

#ThrowbackThursday The #StefanuttiStocks Coastal Region constructed the new liquid chemical berth 208 (Berth 208) for Transnet Capital Projects (TCP) in 2010. This #marineinfrastructure construction project included the positioning of 72 reinforced #precast concrete beams, which had to straddle adjacent pile caps. The beams, weighing between 65 and 75 ton were placed off a barge and this activity required careful planning in order to optimise safe working conditions. The beams could not be placed if the wind speed exceeded 40km/hr, if wave heights exceeded 0.5m and/or if tidal heights weren’t within a specific window. #ExcellenceInExecution
