SHC Scholars worked hard this year educating local, state, and federal policymakers on barriers created by homelessness to education and services, as well as solutions for those barriers. Through numerous trips, hearings, and engagements, our Scholars continue to advocate for themselves and so many other students experiencing #homelessness right now in our nation. As graduation season gets underway, we’re so proud of all our youth have achieved. They face many challenges that can hinder academic performance – from transient housing, transportation issues, lack of school supplies, chronic absenteeism, poor health, fatigue, hunger and mental health issues. According to SchoolHouse Connection (https://lnkd.in/d_5MmUzZ), the 2020-2021 national average graduation rate for homeless students was 68%. The lack of a H.S. diploma or/GED is the single greatest risk factor for experiencing homelessness for young adults. I recently had the opportunity to connect with Ashby Field Primary School, a fantastic primary school at the heart of the Daventry community and learned about the incredible work they're doing to create a positive environment for their students. However, like many schools, they are facing increasing financial pressure and are looking for support from local businesses. There are many ways we can make a difference – from donating via their JustGiving page, supplying materials for school projects, or even volunteering our time and resources. Increasing financial pressure within schools is leading to heightened stress on teachers, as they face larger class sizes, reduced resources, and growing demands to meet diverse student needs with limited support. This strain can affect both their well-being and their ability to provide the highest quality education. Not only do our teachers provide the highest quality education, they also play a crucial role in safeguarding our children by creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment that promotes their well-being and development. Beyond academic instruction, teachers are often the first to recognize signs of emotional distress, abuse, or neglect, and their vigilance is instrumental in protecting vulnerable students. By fostering trusting relationships, educating children about their rights, and collaborating with parents, school staff, and child protection services, teachers help ensure that students feel secure, valued, and empowered. Their dedication to safeguarding is vital to the health, safety, and success of every child. This is not what Changes parents mean when we use the term "star child." For us, it's used to designate our acting-out teen to adult child who is engaging in oppositional and self-destructive behavior.   Apparently, the term dates back to when we had in-person meetings. New members would list the ages and names of all of their children on our meeting signup sheet and place an asterisk after the name of their acting-out child. Some old-time Changes members maintain that "star child" is a term we use because what we might otherwise want to call our acting-out child is not socially acceptable.  We provide peer counseling to parents in crisis, which complements clinical counseling from professionals.   We give back freely to the community in thanks and recognition of those who walked this path before us and helped each of us. It's this ethos of giving back that has sustained us as a non-profit for the last 28 years.     Image credit: Microsoft Co-pilot (AI-generated).    www.cpsn.org #parentsupport #parenting #singlemoms #teenmentalhealth #juvenilecourts
