In a recent shift in policy, New York City's Education Department has intensified its enforcement of the June 1 deadline for requesting special education services in private schools. This crackdown, aimed at curbing rising costs and addressing fraud, has inadvertently stripped hundreds of children, like Suzette’s hearing-impaired daughter, of critical educational support. These changes, including a prohibition on certain legal actions by private school families, have left many without necessary services, causing concern among families and advocates about the broader impact on students who rely on these supports. For more insights into how these policy changes are affecting families across New York City, read the full article here: [https://buff.ly/3ZysuGB] #NYCEducation #SpecialEducation #EducationPolicy #NYCSchools

90% of South Carolina schools have a School Resource officer assigned to their campus. School resource officers are police officers who are trained to view challenging behavior the same way as they would a criminal act on the streets. As a result, a simple school yard fight can end up being classified as assault and battery. Nationally, we have seen students as young as six arrested by school resource officers. While the safety of our students in schools is paramount, we need to make sure that officers have the tools that they need to deal with challenging behavior of students, learn how to properly deescalate children, and understand how to deal with a student who has a disability. Children are not equipped with the same decision-making abilities as adults, nor are they able to comprehend lifelong consequences of one simple act. Most challenging behaviors are learning opportunities for children to better understand themselves and the world and children should not be treated as little adults. Last week we released a new blog about the school-to-prison pipeline and how public schools can produce positive outcomes for children if fully supported. Special education advocates have filed a new state complaint against Chicago Public Schools (CPS), urging the Illinois State Board of Education to intervene over ongoing transportation issues. For four consecutive years, CPS has struggled to provide reliable bus services for students with disabilities, a requirement under their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The complaint, spearheaded by advocates Miriam Bhimani and Terri Smith, highlights a systemic failure to meet legal obligations, potentially denying students a free appropriate public education as guaranteed by federal law. Without transparency and independent oversight, schools will continue to cut corners in supervision, training and quality of staff resulting in harm to students. School bathrooms are often dangerous for children, and rarely are appropriate measures taken to remedy that sad fact. Imagine having to work in an office all day where you could not use the bathroom safely, or walk through the hallway without fearing victimization. We can and we must do better for our children. It's time for transparency, accountability, and real action to safeguard the rights and dignity of every child in our schools. ➡️Please follow us and share posts to help expose this crisis in public education. #everychildmatters #awareness #educateyourself #education

A painful reminder of how *close* school segregation is. Not only in years (this conversation happened in 1960) but in themes. The first person to speak opposes integration and says that the crowd need not worry about "saving our schools" but must "save our children." Sound familiar? This message is what school privatization advocates use to hand-wave the reality that we all depend on each other. Today the line is "fund students not systems" which relies on the truth of the centrality of children in schooling while hiding the fact that systems are needed to educate said children. By pushing all educational accountability to parents you can ignore the needs of the greater community. https://lnkd.in/efYF4ifZ
