While LGBTQ+ students and allies protest and take action for Day of (No) Silence, it is important that we remain outspoken. As an organization with a mission of improving health and well-being for youth and communities by championing science, we’re committed to fight for evidence-based policies and practices that promote inclusivity and support the well-being of all students. With the recent tragedy of Nex Benedict, our CEO Vignetta Charles and Vice President of Science, Equity, & Integration, Madhuri Jha, MPH, LCSW, wrote an op-ed on the prioritization of supporting LGBTQ+ students. This piece not only highlights the importance of safe spaces where young people can realize their full potential, but how we owe it to LGBTQ+ youth to do better. #thinkingoutloud: The reason many parents are sending their children to Charter schools is thr attempted Indoctrination of LBGTQIA issues that are contrary to many household religions values. Most Democrats feel parents should not be able to opt children out of learning about LGBTQIA issues. I believe the rainbow 🌈 is a religious concept that has been hijacked to a lifestyle that has nothing to do with its original meaning; of the sign of the Covenant between God and earth. (Genesis 9:12-17) "A slim majority of Democrats are opposed to letting parents opt their children out of LGBTQ lessons in school, a new Pew Research Center survey finds. While 54% of U.S. adults at large say parents should be allowed to remove children from lessons on "sexual orientation or gender identity" if the ways these lessons are taught conflicts with their personal views, 51% of Democrats oppose the idea. Republicans are far more likely to approve the opt-out of LGBTQ lessons. The survey found 79% of Republicans and 32% of Democrats believed parents should have the option."

🌟 🌟 The Future of Education Under Project 2025: Key Insights 🌟 🌟 Project 2025 and has ambitious plans for the future of education. Here are three crucial takeaways from their Mandate for Leadership: 1️⃣ Vouchers Everywhere: Project 2025 emphasizes school choice by converting federal education funds into vouchers. This means more families will receive direct funding to choose educational options, reducing centralized control. 2️⃣ Erasing Terms: The initiative aims to "delete" key terms like "diversity, equity, and inclusion" from federal use. This could significantly impact policies around inclusive education and undermine efforts for a more equitable system. 3️⃣ Parental Authority: A strong focus on parental rights includes enforcing parental authority in educational settings, which could lead to controversial policies like outing LGBTQ students without their consent. These proposals underscore a profound shift in how education could be managed, potentially disrupting the current public school system. Now is the time to stay informed and engaged. Let's work together to ensure every student's voice is heard and valued. 💪🏽📚 🌟 Explore how diversity training and coaching services can support your journey in this changing landscape. 🌟 #EducationReform #InclusiveEducation #ParentalRights https://lnkd.in/eGv3mEbi

Critical race theory is bleeding through into the schools and it is hindering students. When I was writing my masters dissertation, the current problem was for people of color. Here we are and it is seeping into LGBTQ+, Native American, and Hispanic cultures. Further, the "Don't Say Gay" law in FL is a prime example of hindering students. We need to use these banned books, such as Beloved and All Boys Aren't Blue to teach students that there is systemic racism and a reason POC wanted their independence to begin with. Adichie even gives a TedTalk about the "Danger of a Single Story," because without that perspective, we read one work and we automatically assume that is the same across the board. Taking multiple works from students hinders that level 4 DOK, it hinders their critical thinking skills, and pulls the connections from history classes. We want our students to do well on state tests, are we are taking everything away from them and teaching to the test. Now let me get off my soapbox and have a real moment. When I was teaching senior English, we read Pygmalion. We talked about instances where roles were switched if race was different, and then the discussion was about social and economic standards and how it all correlates. My students engaged in civil discourse without bashing one another and using text as examples. They understood everyone in that room, at that moment, had different backgrounds, and were empathetic to each other's perspectives. I cried. Without texts, we can't have these discussions and we certainly can not have them when we're reading from white authors, or white male authors.
To uplift Banned Books Week and to honor LGBTQ+ History Month, support the freedom to read, learn and build a just future. In this new feature for Learning for Justice magazine, law professor Khiara M. Bridges, Ph.D., J.D., argues that education in a democracy must prioritize the rights and well-being of all children and families—instead of caving to the demands of small groups claiming “parents’ rights” above all other considerations. “People must learn that in a democracy, it is wrong to expect that educational institutions will reflect only certain experiences, values and beliefs,” Bridges writes. “People must learn that when groups and communities have been made equal citizens under the law, educational institutions must teach their students in a way that is consistent with that equality.” #education, #socialjustice, #humanrights

A recent report from PEN America reveals an alarming rise in educational gag orders, particularly those targeting #LGBTQ+ issues, even as the conservative group Moms for Liberty faces setbacks in recent school board elections. This report, encompassing legislative sessions up to November 1, uncovers a concerted shift in gag orders, moving away from racial and historical themes to more focused restrictions on LGBTQ+ discussions in educational settings. https://lnkd.in/erfb6pHz

We released our latest Understanding America Study report about the value of public education and its purposes, teaching LGBTQ and race-related topics, and parental control. This report is part of a longstanding collaboration with my wonderful USC colleagues Morgan Polikoff Amie Rapaport Marshall Garland Dan Silver and Jake Scollan-Rowley. We’re thrilled to have received extensive coverage in Forbes & the NYT as well as mentions in WSJ, USAToday, Chalkbeat! https://lnkd.in/gUz3yVA5 Most surprising to me--and hopeful-- was strong bipartisan support for public schools over vouchers. Most illuminating is not only do adults disagree about the race- and LGBTQ content children should be learning, and at what grade level, but they also disagree about how to reconcile disagreement! Communities nationwide must be suffering this lack of procedural consensus. Key to coming to consensus will be understanding others' perspectives. Democrats think teaching children to embrace differences is a much more important purpose of education than Republicans, who do not think this is a primary purpose. Republicans are worried about children feeling guilty if they learn about racial injustices and inequality, and Democrats are not. Republicans are more worried than Democrats that learning about topics related to LGBTQ and race will detract from learning other content and skills. And Republicans are more worried than Democrats that reading or learning about transgender or gay people might make children think about whether they are or want to be trans or gay. Understanding others' perspectives is the first step towards compromise! I hope you find our report useful, please reach out if you’d like to discuss.

From article: "Should parents be able to opt their children out of learning about certain topics? Most public K-12 teachers (60%) say parents should not be able to opt their children out of learning about racism or racial inequality in school, even if the way these topics are taught conflicts with the parents’ beliefs. A quarter say parents should be able to opt their children out of learning about these topics. In contrast, more say parents should be able to opt their children out of learning about sexual orientation or gender identity (48%) than say parents should not be able to do this (33%). On topics related to both race and LGBTQ issues, elementary and middle school teachers are more likely than high school teachers to say parents should be able to opt their children out. Like teachers, Americans overall are more likely to say parents should be able to opt their children out of learning about sexual orientation or gender identity (54%) than to say they should be able to opt their children out of learning about racism or racial inequality (34%). Across both issues, Americans overall are somewhat more likely than teachers to say parents should be able to opt their children out." https://lnkd.in/deuPpMSk #curriculum #race #genderidentity #sexualorientation #K12
