More than one-third of children experience at least one traumatic event before they turn 16. Kids who live through trauma are more likely to experience learning problems, increased rates of health and mental health services, increased involvement with the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and long-term health problems. But there is good news. If we can identify struggling families sooner, and offer help that prevents traumatic events, then we can help to break generational cycles of trauma. That is one of the core purposes of our organization, Better Together. If you want to be part of preventing or reducing childhood trauma, then let’s talk. Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a crucial time to raise our voices and stand together against elder abuse. 💜 At St John SA, we are committed to fostering a safe and supportive community for our older adults. Here’s how you can increase your knowledge, support the team, or seek help: 💡 Enrol in our Mental Health First Aid course to support individuals facing mental health problems or crises. Gain the knowledge and skills needed to make a difference. 🌟 Become a volunteer with St John SA and join our Community Care team. Help prevent elder abuse and enrich the lives of older adults by empowering and combating social isolation. Our dedicated volunteers support our clients, promoting independence and social connections to improve their well-being. Socially connected people are less likely to be victims of elder abuse. Older people have rights – the right to make their own decisions, to work, be safe, and be treated with dignity and respect. When others assume an older person cannot do something and exclude them because of their age, it makes them feel invisible and sad. From supporting survivors to advocating for change, each of us plays a vital role in ending child trafficking. God's children are not for sale. By raising awareness, providing resources, and promoting vigilance, we can create safer, more resilient communities where exploitation has no place. Did you know that 3.6 million cases of child abuse are reported every year in the U.S. For every incident of child abuse or neglect that’s reported, an estimated two incidents go unreported. (childprotect.org) Over 40,000 child abuse cases were reported in Utah last year. (utahcjc.org) As celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey continue to be outspoken about the impact of childhood trauma on children, the outcome of unaddressed trauma into adulthood and the need for recovery programs, nonprofit organizations continue to advocate for the support of local communities to help child victims of crime recover in their own backyard. The health of our communities are the responsibility of us all. With a scarcity of therapy access and coverage, the friends nonprofit supporting the CJCSLCo, understands the need for holistic wellbeing pathways to offer some recourse for healing. The recent events at Bondi Junction have left us all feeling devastated, and our thoughts are with the families, first responders, and everyone affected by this tragic situation. As we process this tragedy, it is crucial to consider the impact of ongoing media coverage on our children. Media coverage, whether on TV or online, is constantly available and can be replayed multiple times. While these events are traumatic for adults, they can be even more overwhelming for children. It is important for us to be mindful of how we discuss these events with our children and the potential impact it may have on their mental well-being.
