A sad reality of 2024: On multiple occasions, I've thought about writing a post on the latest round of journalism layoffs. Every time I've held off because deep down I know I can write about the next one in two weeks. Sadly, that has not been proven wrong over the past three months. Some of these layoffs involve friends. Some involve iconic outlets. At this point, it's easier to name the journalists not affected by layoffs or newsroom budgets being slashed to where they are doing more with less. That said, I enjoyed this post by Jeremy Tunis. Some outlets he names I agree. Some outlets I disagree and a couple I've seen also engage in layoffs. (Plus, full disclosure: in one case Jeremy names a company I've worked for.) It's a fresh look at how the industry, seen from a #communications perspective, is evolving. Rather than look at layoffs, Jeremy brings up multiple platforms that make a difference in his life. #Journalism is not dying, however, the way it is changing can be seen one of two ways. Exciting for the industry and the people who are receiving new and innovative media. Sad for the people whose lives are being affected.

There’s a lot of apocalyptic “journalism is dying” talk that’s getting more hysteric by the day. Yes, we are in the mist of a rapid realignment that started about 25 years ago and is accelerating, lots of change across verticals, newsroom budget and headcounts slashed, deep fragmentation with more competition, mega changes in advertising models, etc. However, today I’m compiling a list of platforms that are doing a lot of things right and different. I don’t say this because some might have covered my clients, its because they’re informing, adapting, and entertaining in new and innovative ways.
