Last week, the 72andSunny Amsterdam team made waves at ADNIGHT by launching 72&, a unique “Residency Programme” aimed at celebrating Amsterdam’s vibrant culture. Participants took a seat in the iconic 72andSunny Black Chairs and had just 72 seconds to pitch their innovative ideas - with nearly 400 attendees and over 30 candidates interviewed in just two hours. Just have fun with it. This was the advice that NFL EVP for Marketing Tim Ellis would give the creative team at 72andSunny As Glenn Cole says nothing would put the wind in their sails more than that This might sound like unusual advice but it makes a lot of sense. It's when you're relaxed and having fun at work that the creative break-though usually happens. When you're focused on the clock on the other hand it's just about getting it done rather than the quality of the idea. At System1 we know the power of emotion created by the work itself so I wonder how much a role the emotion you feel when creating that work has? On both occasions I have won creative awards I would describe as the most fun I have had creating new campaigns. Both felt 'easy', both just got better every time we talked, both had lots of moments we laughed (and the odd cry), both didn't actually feel like work. I wonder how much better the output would be if we asked ourselves and our teams "how can we have more fun with this?" I thoroughly enjoyed doing this podcast. Not only do we lay out our NFL strategy with lots of fun anecdotes and lessons we’ve learned along the way, we get into the fundamentals of what makes a great client-agency partnership. We talk about the joy of creation, the art of taking risks, leadership, the payback of relentless attention to art, the power of raw emotion, and the need to continually expand your horizons. And I get to tell a bunch of stories, which I always love to do. Have a listen. I especially hope all the people who are either considering jumping into marketing or the agency world, or have recently joined, will take the time to consider some of these things.
