If you know any students who are the first generation in their family to attend a college or university and they attend school in Chicago, NY/NJ or LA areas - please do let them know about this amazing program. The monthly workshops and being paired 1:1 with a mentor for the 2 year journey can be a real game changer in terms of building a network, practice interviewing/public speaking, seek internships and be career ready in the profession of their choice. And ANY is always looking for mentors willing to devote their time, experience and network to be paired 1:1 with a student through this journey. It’s a very personalized and tangible way to see the impact you can have on someone else’s life, education and career.

Some of the students got stuck after "What's your name?" and "What do you do?" at our networking workshop. They feel like they cannot ask anything not professionally-related during networking. We told them to ask about their job as follow ups: What is your favorite part about your job? What are your challenges? What is your company culture like? Meanwhile, in the back of the room, Michelle Quevedo-Penn and I reminisced about me breaking the ice by talking about a great carnitas joint around the corner from where we were and how she was looking for ways to welcome new team members. 😆 So, what is your networking style? Are you all business? Or are you more casual? What are some of your networking icebreaker questions? And why is it not "What's your favorite dinosaur?" #networkingtips #professionaldevelopment

Once again this year, the BLX Internship Program has a major problem on its hands: Too many talented, diverse interns and not enough firms to take them on. The program was founded in late 2020 by a group of four advisors who wanted to see the industry more accurately reflect the nation it serves. Known as BLX for short, the organization's goal is to provide an opportunity for underrepresented financial planners to secure internships at independent financial planning firms. "Unfortunately, we won't be able to place every applicant because we just don't have that many firms," co-founder Luis Rosa said. "The way it's looking with the number of applications, even if half are qualified applicants, we're still only able to place about a fraction of the qualified applicants." "We shouldn't have to do that" Recently I was talking to someone in the industry and that was their sentiment surrounding extended & enhanced onboarding for new summer interns. We had just discussed how our Workforce Development team gets a full week to get our new summer interns (current college students studying something construction or engineering related) and how appreciative we are that our Execs & Operations Team fully support this investment. Should we HAVE to do this? To me that is irrelevant - we have data and anecdotal evidence showing that we NEED to do this. Our commitment to "Investing In People" compels us to take the time necessary to set these young folks (most of whom are new to the industry) up for success & for "Winning In The Field" Reminds us of the quote from Henry Ford: "The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay." It's good for the interns, Sargent, our industry, and our region(s).
