This is a big deal. Celebrities enter the space every day (her husband has been here for over 10 years) and while intentions and quality vary, there's a consistency in the pattern as consistent as the players on the back bar: it's rarely women, and when it is, it's almost never in whiskey (I say almost because that ceiling broke with Big Nose Kate Whiskey's partnership with Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone #humblebrag). In the last 36 hours I've been asked 20, 30 times what my take is on the development and I have something to say. (this one's for you Karen Locke). Beyonce launching an American Whiskey is not good. Beyonce launching an American Whiskey is THE GREATEST VALIDATION OF THE WORK BEING DONE EVERYDAY BY GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS TO MAKE WHISKEY MORE INCLUSIVE AND REPRESENTATIVE OF TODAY'S INDUSTRY LANDSCAPE. sorry, stuck in caps. Work led by individual champions in the industry like Peggy Noe Stevens, Becky Paskin, Amanda Victoria (Mintz) with pioneers like Hollis B Worth, Rebecca Harris, Tracie Franklin, Allison Parc, Marianne Eaves, Jane Bowie along with groups such as OurWhisky Foundation, Black Bourbon Society, Spirited Women Collective, Bourbon Women and The The Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing & Distilling (The MJF); all who advocate for and advance diversity in the whiskey landscape. These voices are loud but have never had an audience of 400 million. I like to think that our collective shouting made an echo; one so loud that Beyonce shouted back. Despite this fact, Black people — specifically Black women — have been underrepresented in the #culinary industry for decades. Although the number of Black chefs is increasing, there’s still plenty of progress to be made in giving us the recognition that we deserve. Kansas City’s first Black Feast Week kicked off this week. In the coming days, I’m going to have some tough decisions to make about lunch or dinner plans. Through Oct. 14, more than a dozen Black-owned restaurants will band together to help support Willa’s Books and Vinyl, the city’s longest standing Black-owned bookstore. Not only is it vital to support locally-owned small businesses — we must ensure this venerable store remains a part of our community. Independent bookstores, especially Black-owned ones, are extremely important to the culture here. Sixteen restaurants will take part. The fare ranges from delicious vegan options to some of the tastiest fried foods in the city. Also on tap: Ethiopian and soul food dishes, as well as several unique loaded baked potato options from TC’s Fully Loaded food truck. Kansas City’s first Black-owned brewery, Vine Street Brewing Co., is offering deals on beer flights. Hungry or thirsty yet? We always found a way and we will continue to always find a way, no matter the circumstances. 💯 One of my favorite things to do while traveling is finding and researching local Black History landmarks. These sites usually contain info that’s rarely taught about in schools. This is a GREAT way to teach your kids Black History too, so that they can see where these events took place. It’s like a mini-field trip. Because yeah, our schools should teach this and we should demand it, but we can’t wait on them to get it right. There’s even an opportunity to do this in your hometown because there are so many sites that we overlook. She overcame the many hurdles faced by free persons of color, and her venture thrived.
