The Zinc Mark | Earlier this year we welcomed the 7th site obtaining The Zinc Mark. Since late 2022 zinc is incorporated in the Copper Mark assurance framework. Producers in mining, smelting/refining and fabrication of zinc can apply for The Zinc Mark by meeting the 33 criteria for environmental performance, social behavior and governance as defined in the Risk Readiness Assessment Criteria Guide. (RRA) A key strength of the standard is the independent third-party assessment of sites. We are accelerating activities for the planned expansion of our Butcherbird Manganese Project in Western Australia, following the promising outcomes of our Feasibility Study conducted in January 2024. The FS highlighted the opportunity to increase manganese concentrate production to 1.1 million tonnes per year, lowering unit costs and estimating a capital expenditure of $49.8 million. Key areas of focus include process optimisation, Front-End Engineering and Design activities, project finance and permitting. Managing Director Justin Brown said: “The Butcherbird Project hosts a world-class manganese deposit with more than 260Mt in resources, which will underpin the mine as a long-life producing asset. The decision to progress with the Stage 2 expansion project comes at a time when manganese ore prices are showing strong gains after a period of depressed pricing during 2023. The decline in prices came to a halt when the extent of the damage at South 32 Limited (S32) Groote Eylandt Manganese Mine became clear with S32 recently forecasting a disruption in production until 2025. GRANGEX AB(publ.) is set to pull in $17.5 million from Anglo American to fund its purchase of the uber high grade #Sydvaranger iron ore mine in #Norway in exchange for a 3% net smelter return. A deal like this is great initially because it allows non-dilutive funding to get the mine restarted, however they can hurt the pocket down the line once production begins. This is especially true if it's a high-cost operation where 3% can sometimes be the entire profit margin of an operation.
