Mentoring is crucial for the career development of any professional, but it plays an even more critical role for Black professionals. Despite their qualifications and contributions, Black professionals often face unique challenges and barriers in the workplace. Here’s why mentoring is essential: 1.        Representation Matters: Mentors from diverse backgrounds provide relatable experiences and inspire confidence. Seeing someone who looks like you succeed can combat imposter syndrome and boost a sense of belonging. 2.       Career Advancement: Black workers make up 12% of entry-level jobs but only 7% of managerial positions. Mentors can help navigate the complexities of career progression, providing guidance on how to overcome systemic barriers. 3.       Building Networks: Mentorship expands professional networks, opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise be closed. A mentor introduces their mentees to other professionals, creating valuable connections within the industry. 4.       Leadership Development: Mentors help develop leadership skills by sharing their experiences and providing advice on communication, decision-making, and relationship-building. Look what I found! While summer cleaning in Lebanon, I discovered a heartfelt letter from Lea Aouad, a management associate who worked under my leadership when I was managing Citi Lebanon. In reading her words, I was brought back to our time together and reminded of her incredible talent. After two years at Citi, Lea went back to school for her Master's, and she's now a rising star at the United Nations. This is why mentorship is so very important to me. For me, it’s moments — and mementos like these that make leadership truly rewarding. I’ve always said — mentoring is a two-way street. My own leadership developed as I guided talents like Lea. Their drive inspires me to become a better mentor, and their success now confirms the importance of mutual growth. The journey that Lea has taken from banking to global impact is a testament to her skills and passion. These are the first steps to building my future with BYP Careers Fest and Leadership Conference in London.

During the pandemic, WPI Business School Assistant Dean and Adjunct Teaching Professor Brent French founded The Workplace Athlete Study Group (WASG). WASG is based on the idea that professionals are athletes striving to deliver sustained high performance under strenuous conditions.  💪   WASG combines three Big Ideas to prepare members for an uncertain/challenging future: 🌟 Jim Loehr, EdD’s premise from the famous Harvard Business Review article The Making of a Corporate Athlete (2001) 📖 🌟 Surgeon and MacArthur Award recipient Atul Gawande’s assertion that “coaching…may be the most effective intervention designed for human performance” (The New Yorker, 2011) 💡 🌟 People learn deeper and faster in a mutually supportive group setting 🧠🤝   Members have performed distinction in WPI’s graduate-level OBC 505 Teaming and Organization for Innovation course and demonstrated a strong willingness to work on their weaknesses (growth mindset, from Stanford University’s Carol Dweck, 2007). A previous history in sports/athletics is not a requirement, just the desire to perform on-the-job at the highest level of their potential. 🚀 Now on his 4th cohort and with over (2) dozen alumni, Assistant Dean French continues to set our future STEM business leaders up for success! 👏 👏 👏 #wpi #businessschool #wpimeansbusiness #workplace #athlete #growthmindset #leadership #peakperformance #support #collaboration
