The pandemic introduced many challenges for families, and one notable concern is the increase in “late talkers” among children. With disruptions to regular routines, limited social interactions and increased screen time, many young children have experienced delays in language development. Kara Brumley, co-owner of The Goddard Schools of Hendersonville and Gallatin, TN, joined Nashville’s WKRN News 2 to discuss the concern and share actionable guidance for parents to help develop their children’s language skills.

Dual Language Learners (#DLLs) have the potential to reap the academic 🧠, social 🗣️, and cultural 🌎 benefits of #bilingualism when they are in #earlylearning environments that effectively support the development of both their home language and English. Conversely, a lack of support for children’s language development brings a multitude of adverse effects, including home language loss, weakened family ties, and negative academic impacts. In the listening sessions that the DLL Master Plan advocates held with California State Preschool Program (#CSPP) administrators and teachers, participants raised a need for further professional development opportunities, particularly for supporting DLLs. Collaboration is key for the success of our dually identified English learners. Often, we fall into the 'specialization trap,' a term coined by Dr. Sara Kangas (2017), where we focus solely on our area of expertise, delivering a disjointed education to students who need a holistic approach. Picture this: A special education teacher focuses only on a child's specific language disability, while an EL teacher concentrates solely on the student's second language acquisition. This fragmented approach doesn't serve the student's complete educational needs. To break free from this trap, we need to bridge the gap between special education and EL teaching. It's crucial to ensure our English learners with disabilities receive comprehensive services and supports for English fluency, academic success, and beyond. So how do we do this? Kangas (2018) suggests two strategies: Co-create individualized education programs (IEPs) and establish regular consultations. By pooling our unique skills and knowledge, we can develop strategies that meet the dual needs of our students. Let's unite our expertise for the comprehensive success of our students. #SpecialEducation #EnglishLearning #Collaboration #EducationSuccess
