Have you ever wondered what happens to all the data collected during a decennial census? All that information about our country's citizens needs to get to multiple federal programs and agencies while still protecting individuals' privacy and confidentiality. My Maximus coworker, Evan Davis, explored this topic and the need for cross-agency data sharing in a recent article for Federal Times. Among his points, Evan discusses the importance of appropriately distinguishing between and properly labeling sensitive and non-sensitive data, while also reinforcing the need for security protocols that help prevent cyberattacks. I am thrilled to announce that Prashant Agrawal's paper on "Publicly Auditable Privacy-Preserving Electoral Rolls" has been accepted for presentation at CSF 2024 (https://lnkd.in/gvjihixN)! This marks a significant step in our ongoing effort to enhance electronic voting systems' security and privacy aspects. In e-voting, the privacy and security of electoral rolls are paramount yet often overlooked. Traditional methods risk exposing voters' identities, leaving them vulnerable to profiling and manipulation by political entities. Our research delves deep into these challenges, analyzing the potential threats of electoral roll manipulation and voter profiling. We've crafted formal security definitions and, more importantly, developed a novel protocol that ensures electoral rolls are both publicly auditable and privacy-preserving. What does this mean? We believe this will have a significant impact on voters and the election process! Eligible voters can now verify their own inclusion on the roll, while political parties and auditors can perform statistical audits without compromising individual privacy. Additionally, our protocol supports public, post-election audits of the eligibility verification processes at polling stations. This is a crucial step in preventing issues like ballot stuffing, unauthorized voting, double voting, and the denial of voting rights. By never fully revealing the electoral roll, our approach effectively safeguards against large-scale voter targeting and manipulation. An estimated 4 billion individuals are expected to cast their votes in this historical election year. Does it sound like a cybersecurity challenge to you?   🗳️ While this number is impressive, one cannot overlook the immense technical security challenge it represents, particularly the e-voting systems. Safeguarding the integrity, privacy, and fairness of the electoral process in 2024 is essential to uphold democratic principles.   To address this key issue, Quarkslab worked with the ANSSI - Agence nationale de la sécurité des systèmes d'information and the Loria research unit/lab on analyzing the security of Belenios [1] an open-source, verifiable online voting platform. Throughout the audits, our experts reviewed all aspects of the solution, from the advanced cryptographic features to the evaluation of its web interface.   💪 The primary challenges encountered during these audits included:   1. Assessing the security of an e-voting system in the absence of a standardized, dedicated and publicly defined evaluation methodology publicly defined. 2. Understanding the complexity of e-voting solutions, which involve six distinct roles with specific tasks, adding depth to the analysis. 3. Evaluating the advanced cryptographic mechanisms, previously scrutinized by renowned experts from LORIA in the field.   ☝️ What were the outcomes?    1. Improving Belenios’ security thanks to our findings. 2.
