Power-to-heat (P2H) is often mentioned as the solution to decarbonise individual heating. Tomorrow, there will be an opportunity to discuss P2H serving as the solution to decarbonise large-scale district heating systems. As the PGE Energia Ciepła S.A. and Polskie Towarzystwo Elektrociepłowni Zawodowych (#PTEZ) we will share some insights from Gdańsk, where district heating system is fuelled i.a. by heat coming from electrode boilers. The video recording from the Institute’s latest Webinar on “Energy Security in SEE Europe and the East Mediterranean” which was held online on December 19,is now available and has been uploaded on the YouTube channel of the IENE. The video, which you may access here (https://lnkd.in/dKgYksps), covers the full 2 1/2 hour event which attracted strong interest and wide participation from the region and beyond. This timely IENE event helped to highlight the vital role that the south-eastern part of Europe can play, in terms of gas and electricity supply, as an emerging energy hub in the coming years. The importance of the region as an important overall energy supply viaduct has been strengthened lately as a result of an increasingly geopolitically fragmented world, where two major wars and several regional skirmishes are underway, raising wider issues of energy security. The participation in the Webinar of some of top energy security experts and acclaimed energy professionals from SEE and beyond contributed to the event’s success and the strong messages this send to governments and industry. 🎥 Video interview with Ali Arjomandi Nezhad on his research project: "Data-Driven Stability Enhancement for Cross Border Electric Network". "Traditionally, power systems were dominated by synchronous generator based resources, which act as voltage sources. However, they are being replaced with inverter based resource, which act as current source. Therefore, the transition to stability is being endangered" shares Ali about the context and challenges that his project is addressing. Ali's Host Organisation is Imperial College London, UK.  Research Directors: Bikash Pal, Yusheng Xue and Damiano Varagnolo. InnoCyPES has received funding from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (#MSCA) programme. Part of #HorizonEurope, the MSCA is the European Union's flagship funding programme for doctoral #education and postdoctoral training of researchers. The project started in January 2021 and will be completed in December 2024. As we have just embarked into the New Year our plans and aspirations become more clarified.Yet it is is useful to look back, even for a minute or two, as this helps see things in perspective.(https://lnkd.in/dBtmJDJt) From IENE’s angle the new year starts very dynamically with lots of conferences and colloquia planned in all different countries in the region in the months ahead. Also, on the research side we carry on with some major studies including the new “SEE Energy Outlook” scheduled for publication on the first half of 2025 and other equally important research projects including the Vertical Corridor,which runs along the East Balkans and further north, and another extensive study which covers all new electricity Interconnectors in the East Mediterranean under construction or planned over the next six years. Both research projects are conducted on a multi client basis with several major energy companies financially backing this effort by participating as partners. Another key project which the Institute is currently involved in is the “ Energy Options for the East Mediterranean”, which is a comprehensive review and analysis of the military and energy forces at play in the broader region and how old and new energy sources ,country rivalries and terrorist acts are shaping the new geopolitical landscape.Our latest webinar on Energy Security in SE Europe and the East Mediterranean (https://lnkd.in/dFckpzqa) has certainly helped by bringing to the fore the key issues concerning the region. Publication of this new major IENE study is expected sometime in March/April this year. On a personal level I am pursuing my efforts to further strengthen Energia.gr , Greece’s oldest energy portal which this year celebrates 23 years of continuous operation with thousands of visitors every day. Our latest initiative to include live interviews,via video,with important market players is proving a great success and has certainly attracted higher audiences. Last week Robert Thijssen and Ernst-Jan Bakker visited Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação and Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) in Brasília. The visit to MCTI was in preparation for the Joint Committee Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation between the Netherlands and Brazil, which will take place in Brasilia on 7 May. The JCM is a biannual meeting senior executive level between Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação and Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat and Ministry of Education, Culture and Science from the Netherlands side. The JCM will determine the priority topics for collaboration like #biorefinery #bioenergy #aviation #space #research and #hydrogen, as well as collaboration on #openscience and large scale research infrastructures. The Netherlands is a priority country for Brazil in the area of S,T & I collaboration.   Also the Science and Technology and Renewable Energy departments of the Brazilian ministry of foreign affairs Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) were visited. On S&T we discussed to possibility to work on a dedicated mission from Brazil to the Netherlands next year. 🎉 In Western Australia (WA), the government has announced it would invest $AUD 4.3 million towards a CCUS Action Plan for the state, aiming to accelerate deployment of proven CCUS technologies in WA, support research into new CCUS technology, and attract investment in CCUS. The announcement follows the release of key findings from a study commissioned by the WA LNG Jobs Taskforce, with research undertaken by the Global CCS Institute and CSIRO.
