As we celebrate American independence today - we are also thinking about the 8 Americans that Hamas continues to hold hostage, and all 120 hostages who remain in Gaza. We call for their freedom every day.
The eight Americans still held hostage by Hamas include Edan Alexander, Sagui Dekel-Chen, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Omer Neutra, and Keith Siegel. Tragically, Itay Chen, Gadi Haggai, and Judith Weinstein Haggai are presumed dead.

5 American hostages are being held by Hamas in Gaza, deprived of the very freedoms we cherish. Their plight is a stark reminder that the fight for liberty is ongoing. Our collective independence is not complete until every American is free.
Here's what you can do:
1. Urge Congress to help release the hostages held by Hamas.
2. Tell your lawmakers to do everything in their power to bring our fellow citizens back to safety.
As part of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad of America's Heritage Abroad, we believe in the importance of caring for one another, especially when fellow Americans are in peril. When five Americans are kidnapped abroad, it's our duty to stand up and demand action.
Our voices can make a difference. Together, we can work towards a world where everyone can celebrate their own independence.
May freedom ring for all.

"It's time to teach history in all African schools, because Africans need to know who participated in their economic and political genocide" -Professor Uju Anya.
When Britain celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of its monarch in 2021, this old Kenyan fighter tried to send the late queen a message: "Let Elizabeth bring what belongs to me."
She was tortured with axes during Kenya's struggle for independence from British colonial rule.
When he visited Kenya in October 2023, King Charles spoke about Britain’s “abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence” committed against Kenyans during their fight for independence but he refused to apologise.
The British PM, Rishi Sunak, also said Britain will not apologise to Africa and reparations will not be paid for slave trade & imperialism.

On this day in 1847, The Liberian Declaration of Independence was adopted and signed.
"In it, Liberians charged their mother country, the United States, with injustices that made it necessary for them to leave and make new lives for themselves in Africa. They called upon the international community to recognize the independence and sovereignty of Liberia. Britain was one of the first nations to recognize the new country. The United States did not recognize Liberia until the American Civil War." - https://lnkd.in/g9F5Fn_M

From Individual Oppression to Collective Solidarity: A Reflection on Gaza
Nelson Mandela famously once said, "But we know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians". These words resonate deeply in today's world, where the people of #gaza continue to endure a seemingly endless cycle of suffering and oppression. As we witness this ongoing tragedy, it is time for us to reflect on the power of #collectivesolidarity and #empathy, going beyond the boundaries of individual struggles. The ongoing genocide in Gaza is not just a regional issue; it is a #globalcrisis that calls for our #collectiveconscience and action. It is a stark reminder that our #freedom, our #humanity, and our collective future are intertwined. We can no longer turn a blind eye to the injustices occurring in Gaza, for the suffering of the Palestinian people reflects the limitations of our collective freedom.
Mandela's words encourage us to recognise that the journey to true #freedom and #justice is incomplete as long as any community faces oppression. The quest for collective empathy demands that we acknowledge the pain of others, regardless of their nationality, religion, or background. It is a call for humanity to unite in #solidarity and work together to create a world where oppression, discrimination, and violence are replaced with compassion, understanding, and justice.
In the face of the ongoing atrocities in Gaza, we must ask ourselves how we can move beyond mere empathy and into tangible action. It is not enough to merely lament the suffering; we must actively support organisations and initiatives working tirelessly to alleviate the plight of the Palestinian people. We must advocate for peace and justice in the region, pushing for meaningful dialogues and resolutions that prioritise human dignity and coexistence. Furthermore, we must remember that social media activism alone is not sufficient. Genuine solidarity means actively supporting those on the frontlines, whether they are human rights activists, aid workers, or the Palestinians themselves, who have shown extraordinary resilience in the face of adversity.
Nelson Mandela's words challenge us to move beyond the confines of our individual struggles and consider the broader narrative of #humanity. The suffering in Gaza serves as a stark reminder that our #collectivefreedom is intertwined, and it is our #sharedresponsibility to strive for a world where oppression, wherever it may occur, is eradicated.
In this age of interconnectedness and shared global responsibilities, we must amplify our voices and actions for the people of Gaza. Their freedom is inexorably linked to our own. By standing together in #collectivesolidarity and #empathy, we can help pave the path to a brighter future, where the words of Mandela serve as a testament to our commitment to #justice, #peace, and the inherent value of #everyhumanlife 👊🏽🖤.

More History:
As this 10 June 1970 article from the Southern Illinoisan describes, one of the difficulties that Israel has in negotiating with the "Palestinians" is that they are not "one people" and there is no one group that represents them.
The Palestinians are a rather diverse group, with diverse aims, and they are ruled over by a variety of militant groups, none of which have the authority to speak for all of them.
That was true in 1970, it was true in 1948 and it's true in 2023.
It would be like America trying to negotiate with the various street gangs in our big cities. Nobody has authority to speak for them all.

The Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916 was a secret deal between Britain and France to divide up the Middle East after World War I. Under this agreement, Palestine was supposed to come under international administration. However, this conflicted with other promises made by Britain:In the Balfour Declaration of 1917, Britain expressed support for "the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people". This was seen as a precursor to the creation of Israel.
During the war, Britain had also promised the Arabs independence from the Ottoman Empire in exchange for their revolt against the Turks. This was part of the Hussein-McMahon Correspondence in 1915-1916.
So Britain made conflicting promises to the Arabs, the French, and the Zionist movement regarding the fate of Palestine after the war. This laid the groundwork for future conflict.
#conflicting promises
It is imperative that we halt the cycle of senseless wars plaguing our world and instead pave the way for peaceful resolutions that benefit all parties involved. By embracing diplomacy and cooperation, we can create a future where conflicts are resolved through dialogue and compromise, leading to win-win outcomes for everyone. It is time to shift our focus towards building a future of prosperity, where nations work together towards common goals, fostering growth, development, and harmony on a global scale. Let us leave behind the burdens of war and march forward into a new era of peace and shared success.
