Good news for Ohio! The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) has received approval from the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce (ODEW) as an evidence-based reading intervention program. Ohio's recent literacy legislation requires that, beginning no later than the 2024-2025 school year, school districts "derive reading curriculum and obtain instructional materials from high-quality sources listed by the ODEW". Janelle Norton, Legislation Liaison at IMSE weighs in about the new partnership: "Because we're now approved to satisfy all the provisions of these reading bills, Ohio districts can find everything they need in one place — IMSE. We're thrilled to have the opportunity to support the state's teachers in the coming months with proven approaches so that they can empower every one of their students to read." With its new literacy education laws, Ohio joins 37 other states and the District of Columbia in “prescribing pedagogy consistent with the science of reading” in an effort to combat the low literacy rates of students in America. Philadelphia teachers leave the profession at significant rates — so high, in fact, that the numbers of educators quitting teaching are larger than the number of graduates of local teacher-preparation programs, according to a new analysis out of Pennsylvania State University. The research comes amid a nationwide teaching shortage, in a state that recently recorded its lowest-ever number of teaching certificates issued. Here are some takeaways from “Where Did They Go? Examining Teacher Career Pathways in Philadelphia County,” the research out of Penn State’s Center for Evaluation and Education Policy Analysis, examining teachers employed by any traditional public or charter school in Philadelphia for the school years from 2017-18 to 2021-22. https://lnkd.in/e_-GHThg

Post-pandemic, the education sector saw a significant increase in vacancies. According to Merod (2023), the number of educators leaving the profession caused vacancies to surge by more than 50% between 2022 and 2023. Despite this, veteran educators who stayed in the classroom cite freedom and impact as the reasons for their commitment to the profession. Freedom to try new ideas and creative strategies is a challenge that yields excitement, which keeps teachers engaged and motivated. However, the most significant reason for veteran educators to stay in the profession is the impact on their students and the relationships they build with them. At the end of the day, as the article from EdWeek (2024) states, educators do what we do for the kids first and foremost. #education #teachers #students #impact #commitment
