(also, I'll be in Liverpool, Lancaster and Manchester). - Nothing new at product testing to be honest, August was really thought about changes and personal stuff, so, nothing new to test, nothing new to share... or maybe yes? I've been testing products and here's my review: - Elgato Microphone and stand: it's a good deal if you want a good quality mic with a stunning design, what's a little bit annoying is that when I connect another device (like AirPods to my Mac) the default configuration on my device disappear, so I need to configure the output and input manually.  - AirPods Max: I'm a huge fan of the noise cancellation products because I work in every kind of environment. The downside of the product is the microphone. During meetings people hear me really bad, BUT, IDK how the Apple engineers created this 'head tracking' thing, when you play a Dolby Atmos with noise cancellation AND head tracking configuration.... its just mind-blowing.  That's all for this edition, sorry about the little information, so many personal things and travel in less than 2 weeks. Happy Family Day! Here's Monday musing on bias... Have you ever considered how our design practices might be inherently biased? In Modern Design, introspection is not just a tool for creativity but a necessary path to inclusivity. Dori Tunstall's book, "Decolonizing Design," challenges the conventional narrative and asks us to reimagine the roots of our design practices. Modern Design often carries more biases than we realize due to its white, Eurocentric roots. To excel as designers in an increasingly globalized world, it's vital to apply the same rigorous critical thinking to our understanding of Design that we do to our projects.  Here is where 'Design Decolonization' comes into play. 'Decolonizing Design' means revising traditional design practices to remove Eurocentric biases and incorporate diverse global perspectives. This approach aims to make Design more inclusive, equitable, and representative of different cultures and experiences. From putting Indigenous perspectives at the forefront to dismantling the tech and biases of racial prejudice within the European Modernist project, Dori clarifies a path not just to amend but to innovate through genuine inclusivity. Good Design transcends aesthetics and functionality. It's about capturing the diverse cultural essence of our world. This shift is vital to evolving modern design practices to be more universally reflective and impactful. Lately, I’ve been speaking with Product Managers (PMs) about the challenges of building products inclusively. Too often, PEOPLE forget to SPEAK to PEOPLE, i.e. your customers. Too busy beating your competitors (with no evidence they’ve spoken to their customers). I’ve significantly found it concerning that there’s a gap in communication and understanding between those who build (designers/PMs), those who decide (Managers/CEO/CTO) and those who receive (people who end up using the products). So when I hear that the challenges of building products inclusively are that: 🧐 It’s too hard 🧐They don’t have time 🧐 It’s not a requirement (KPI) 🧐 Leaders (those who decide) don’t understand the value 🧐 Leaders (those who decide) want to see an ROI 🧐 It’s perceived as a social cause (BTW, there’s a difference between “social cause” and “designing products inclusively”). The answer seems to be that PEOPLE who are at the receiving end are not at the center of designing for and with them to feel valued (that’s your inclusive angle). Because if you understand people, you’d understand that we’re multifaceted, we’re multidimensional and experience the world uniquely. Like Philippe’s son, he couldn’t tell the difference in colour between priority seat and other seats in a tram because he experiences life as a PERSON who is colour blind. MUJI is no stranger to any of us.  Mujirushi Ryohin, @muji in Japanese, translates as "𝐧𝐨-𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬", continues to live its promise over 4 decades since founded offering a wide variety of good quality products based on three core principles that remain unchanged to this day: ♻ Selection of materials ♻ Streamlining of processes ♻ Simplification of packaging I’ve visited their stores many times in different cities. I don’t know about you, but every time I wandered around their shelves, I couldn’t help wondering - how can they find those almost unnoticeable and yet so critical little pain points and then solve them with such brilliant design ideas.  MUJI is not just a master of product innovation, but in a way a master of creating new needs that you didn’t even realise you have. Ever wish to have a bigger apartment one day so you can get more of their products home?
