BREAKING: Two new fire ant nests have been discovered in Meringandan West, north of Toowoomba. 🚨 We're running out of time to protect our native wildlife and communities from these tiny killers. If we're going to get eradication back on track, the state and federal governments must implement the recommendations from the recent senate inquiry into fire ants. We need ✅ more community outreach, education and advertising, ✅ increased fire ant checks and compliance and ✅ additional funding and resources.

In addition to mitigation measures, the world needs to deal with the impact of climate change that is already here. Having visited beautiful Valparaiso and Vina del Mar in Chile a number of years ago, this story was very touching. So what did Villa Botania do to survive these fires? Digging deeper from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) I found this article (link below) from Thomson Reuters where it mentions that “before the flames crept close, the community cut back vegetation, pruned foliage and cleared trash surrounding the hilltop homes. They also brought in water to keep soil wet, and a wall and trench around the area kept the blaze from coming closer.” We need to share these sample cases of sucess, including details on how these initiatives came about and how were they funded, to encourage other communities to implement #adaptation and #resiliency measures to deal with high risk, high frequency events such as forest fires. https://lnkd.in/gQ8vk4wA
When wildfires swept through 🇨🇱 Chile in early February, they left a trail of destruction. The village of Villa Botania, despite being directly in it their path, was left unscathed. Community preparedness seems to have played a big part. Find out how 👉 https://lnkd.in/dwbQPbBv

"As the weather warms and the days lengthen, the familiar signs of spring begin to emerge. A time of growth and transition, the spring welcomes a mosaic of life and activity, perhaps best exemplified by the return of migratory birds." ✍Kyle Dahlquist, Clean Water Corpsmember / AmeriCorps Member placed at Pennington SWCD https://lnkd.in/gfxi8yfF #GetThingsDone #ClimateCareers #EnvironmentalCareers #ConservationCareers #ServiceYear #CareerExperience #YearOutdoors #ServeOutdoors [Image Description] Two swans in a wetland, text on the side reads "New Blog Post"

Where can journalists find great stories that no one else is writing about? There's nothing like exploring parts of the USA that the national media seldom visits. Bravo to Oregon writer Geoff Nudelman for this fascinating piece from eastern Oregon's high desert country. This is rancher country, and wildfire country, too. We at The Chronicle of Philanthropy commissioned Geoff to spend time on the dirt roads of Harney County, as part of a major coverage initiative called "The Commons." Geoff came back with a fascinating story of how long-time adversaries have learned to work together, building fire-fighting strategies that are fairer and more effective. There's plenty of coverage these days about polarization in America. But there's just as much quiet cooperation going on, too, as people with different heritages and values discover how to get more done, working together. If you're interested in such themes -- and I hope the answer is yes -- check out Geoff's story, and sign up for more such coverage via The Commons's weekly newsletter on LinkedIn. https://lnkd.in/gPSfk6JH
