Whoever the team is behind promoting The Color Purple movie and actress Fantasia Barrino have my admiration and respect! Here are my 5 marketing & messaging trespectfully! from their efforts: 1. They understood that the movie & book had a built-in fanbase that could be tapped into for the remake. They didn't have to go searching for their audience. They only had to add to it with their star-studded cast. 2. The interviews the cast have been doing have not only shined a light on the movie, but on their own lives and how they connect with their roles. This makes the audience even more invested in the remake and more interested in the actors as a whole. 3. Fantasia played Celie on Broadway and earned rave reviews, not to mention that her voice and energy matches this role perfectly! This helped them tap into the Broadway audience and her fanbase. Cause people who love Fantasia LOVE Fantasia. Plus, it's just brilliant casting! 4. Fantasia is nominated for a Golden Globe for this role. Although you see plenty from the other cast members, they are allowing her to shine without it seeming like favoritism. However, her stylist has been doing an amazing job with her wardrobe, which makes me stand out and look like a winner(I know other cast members are nominated, she's just the one I see the most). 5. They are tapping into the culture and nostalgia. Films like these are cult classics, especially with African Americans. You have to know how to talk and relate to the culture you're trying to reach. From the fashions to the conversations and even how the trailers are put together, they are doing an amazing job. They are highlighting scenes that are best known by fans of the movie and showcasing how, although this is a remake, it's also a re-imagining. American Psycho ranks among my top ten favourite films of all time. Partly down to Christian Bale's iconic portrayal of Patrick Bateman and his quest for the perfect business card. A few learnings from Bateman I picked up: • Memorable creative: Bateman’s cards were designed to be unforgettable, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who received one. • Attention to detail: His meticulous choice of the bone-coloured card highlights an obsession with the minutiae that define excellence. • More than a card: For Bateman, a business card was an introduction, a handshake, a first "hello”. • High Quality: The card was a small but telling reflection of Bateman's standards and style. Introducing the new model to getting films and TV shows made, "Brand Finance". . . This is Timmy and Marty for Chanel. Brands are starting to make more content, especially longer / long form content. They are rapidly positioning themselves to become the new studios. The Barbie movie is the biggest, and so far, best case study example of this. As the head of global brand finance for film and TV, I can confirm that many more projects and brands are following suit. Private equity is far and in between these days, and although global co-productions certainly come with their perks that the U.S. doesn't offer - it is still not enough to provide budgets needed for bigger projects. Brands can do that much more sustainably than other companies, and in a way that puts them in immediate win-win situations from multiple sides. They can monetize ROIs on their own IP (which already has an embedded audience / customers), content, talent partnerships, and much more. For them, the most important words are "brand value and authenticity" - and beyond that it's pretty fair game, of course depending on the story, talent, and filmmakers attached. So memorize the term "brand finance", for it will become every storyteller and producer's best friend in the very near future. And as far as reactions go to this short film that was released yesterday, the fans are now eagerly asking for a Marty and Timmy official film collaboration.
