This is a dangerous and frightening time for 2SLGBTQI+ people, especially gender diverse young people.
A wave of regressive and discriminatory policies — pushed by right-wing politicians too cowardly to stand up to prejudice and misinformation — has reached Canada.
We are in a fight for queer lives.
Egale Canada and its fearless leader Helen Kennedy have been on the front lines of that fight — for equality, for dignity, and for justice — for decades. Egale’s work has never been more important than it is today.
For that reason, I urge you to join me in making a financial contribution to Egale’s efforts. Alex and I have subscribed for a monthly donation, and we hope that you will do the same.
I am deeply proud that my law firm, McCarthy Tétrault, has stepped up to lead the fight against anti-2SLGBTQI+ laws in the courtroom, on behalf of and alongside Egale and other 2SLGBTQI+ organizations across the country. We are litigating in New Brunswick and in Saskatchewan, and we will go to court in Alberta if the government there moves forward with the awful policies it proposed last week.
It is the privilege of a lifetime to do this work, especially with Egale’s brilliant Director of Legal, Bennett (BJ) Jensen. But our pro bono representation is far from sufficient to support all the crucial work that Egale is doing in schools, workplaces, and communities across Canada.
That’s why your support is so needed now.
Because, armed with truth and compassion, we can win this fight.
Because, together, we can achieve justice, equality, and respect for all 2SLGBTQI+ people.
Because we will never quit. And we will win. But we need your help.
Please join us.
