𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐒𝐀 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐏𝐡𝐃 I often get asked why I chose to go to the USA over Europe for my PhD, despite having offers from prestigious European institutions like ETH Zurich, Max Planck Society, LMU Munich, Helmholtz Association, and EMBL. My goal to stay in academia significantly influenced my decision. Here are my reasons: 1️⃣ 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭-𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: The pace at which my field of research is advancing is significantly faster in the US, aligning better with my career aspirations. 2️⃣ 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫: The US shows greater inclusivity and representation in academia, particularly for people of color, which is crucial for my academic career. 3️⃣ 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬: Fewer barriers in the US, easing both professional and personal life. 4️⃣ 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: The stipends and financial support are generally higher in the US. PhDs are Modern Slaves 📚🔗 I'm writing this post from the forests, spending my summer holidays away from the city’s robotic life, surrounded by nature. 🌲🏞️ PhD gives challenges and tough times. The most painful part is that PhD students, who are at the forefront of innovation, are still paid less. 😔 I have many friends around the globe who are thinking of leaving their PhD programs because of these low salaries. 💸 This needs to change. The world should realize that PhD students have families to support and social lives to balance. 👨👩👧👦⚖️ Suggestions: Increase Stipends: Ensure PhD students receive fair compensation for their work. Provide Benefits: Offer health insurance and other essential benefits. Flexible Working Conditions: Allow remote work and flexible hours to help balance personal and academic responsibilities. Career Support: Provide resources and guidance for career development both inside and outside academia. It's time to recognize and support the invaluable contributions of PhD students. Let's make academia a place where innovation and well-being go hand in hand. 🌟 Best, AR #PhDLife #SupportPhDStudents #Innovation #FairPay #WorkLifeBalance

Aaand that's a wrap! I can't believe my research placement with In2scienceUK and Queen Mary University of London has ended! Going into this placement, I was nervous, not knowing what I was getting myself into - especially since it had a health focus - and I came from a Development background - two seemingly different worlds. But I am so incredibly grateful to have been able even to take part. Doing this placement has bolstered my confidence in realising that, despite my apparent 'lack of applicable knowledge', my passion and my lived experiences were enough to pull me through. My ability to adapt to recognize which factors exacerbated self-management of multiple long-term conditions, and link some of what I had learnt at uni for my race module enabled me to contribute in a way that I didn't think was possible. A huge shout out to my placement host, Megan Armstrong - who unfortunately isn't on LinkedIn - but made me feel at home and encouraged me to speak my mind even if I didn't have faith in myself. These eight weeks have been nothing short of incredible! I am also grateful to Action for Race Equality and Voluntary Action Islington for inviting me to speak at their joint event in front of the University of Oregon students to speak further on what the project has found. If anyone is considering doing a PhD or is dancing around the idea with it, please do apply for the in2research program - it gives you an in-depth insight (with a mentor who's well established in their academic career!) into what PHD applications entail, how to go about doing PhD applications, and also a PAID research placement. (Which to be frank, is hard to find!) If you have any other questions about the placement or questions about applications, please message me, I'll be more than happy to answer them. But for now, here is a (tiny) summarized version of what I was working on and my experiences of the program.

🔬The Role of Research in Partnerships Academic research plays a crucial role in driving innovation and solving complex industry challenges. Universities offer a unique environment for long-term scientific inquiry that often leads to groundbreaking advancements. These research efforts not only develop new technologies but also foster interdisciplinary collaboration, train the next generation of innovators, and help de-risk early-stage innovations before they are ready for commercial application. Knowledge sharing between academic and industry scientists often generate breakthrough ideation that accelerates knowledge generation and innovation. To maximize impact, successful collaborations between academia and industry integrate real-world challenges into academic research. This is achieved through joint research projects, industry-sponsored initiatives, internships, and targeted problem-solving events like hackathons. By aligning academic expertise with industry needs, both sectors can co-create solutions that address pressing challenges. Some notable examples of successful research partnerships include: ✅Stanford University and Google, where the research that birthed Google’s search engine originated, demonstrating how academic foundations can lead to industry-shaping innovations. ✅University of Cambridge and AstraZeneca, working together to develop new treatments for cancer and cardiovascular disease. ✅IBM and University of Illinois, where joint efforts in supercomputing and AI have driven advancements for both academia and industry. These partnerships demonstrate how integrating academic research with industry challenges creates a win-win scenario, leading to technological breakthroughs, commercial success, and a positive impact on society.
