Based in Townsville, Chris Congoo is The Salvation Army Territorial Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Coordinator. Chris says NAIDOC is a special week for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and for the wider Australian society to “celebrate our shared culture and the achievements and the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities.” At his local Salvos, they hold a range of activities during NAIDOC Week, encouraging community participation. “For example, we invite local Elders in from the wider community to come to our church and teach about rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.” This includes yarning circles and cooking traditional food for community members. Chris is currently working on several projects for Salvos churches, centres and services, including The Salvation Army Cultural Framework around areas such as Acknowledgement of Country and Welcome to Country. “For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it's a ceremonial process that we've been practicing for centuries, and we need the Australian people to recognise, acknowledge and respect these protocols.” To read more from Chris, go to: https://lnkd.in/e7rNbPeN #TheSalvationArmy #NAIDOCWeek

"Together, Canadians must do more than just talk about reconciliation; we must learn how to practise reconciliation in our everyday lives—within ourselves and our families, and in our communities, governments, places of worship, schools, and workplaces." I align with above extract from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Volume One: Summary: Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future.

Today is a day to: ➡️ Remember the children who never returned home. ➡️ Reflect on the heritage that was lost. ➡️ Honor the legacies that were erased. On June 3rd, we commemorate the Mabo decision, a landmark milestone in the fight for land rights and the recognition of Indigenous sovereignty. Mabo Day is a day of celebration, reflection, and ongoing advocacy for the rights and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples'. It honours the legacy of Eddie Mabo and serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward justice, equality, and respect for Indigenous Australians. However, the struggle continues. Issues such as land access, cultural preservation, and social justice remain critical for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities. So, here's an idea 💡 Before engaging in activities that impact the land, consider its significance. Ask yourself if the land you are affecting holds sacred connections, memories, and teachings for those who have already lost so much. Make it your responsibility to consult with Indigenous Custodians and seek permission respectfully. It's not just about the land; it's about the spiritual connection, the memories of ancestors, and the empowerment and significance it holds for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' today. #MaboDay #Respect #Understanding #Responsibility

Today marks the 17th anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The Declaration is the most comprehensive international instrument on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and sets out a universal framework of minimum standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of all Indigenous Peoples across the world. One of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Katie Kiss’s top priorities for her term is promoting the implementation of the Declaration. “At the heart of the Declaration is the acknowledgment that as First Nations peoples, we should have the freedom and power to make the decisions that affect our lives, communities, and our Country,” Commissioner Kiss said. “It’s time for Australia to implement the Declaration in its laws and policies to better protect and progress the rights of First Nations people.” Read more about UNDRIP at https://loom.ly/dkBzqvs #UNDRIP #UNDRIPAnniversary #IndigenousPeoples #FirstNations #humanrights
