This July, our research team explored climate change concerns, climate change risk, and mental health among LGBTQ+ young people. For the first time, we investigated how climate change plays a role in both the mental and physical health of LGBTQ+ youth, and how intersectionality of identity and location impact climate anxiety 🌍☀️ Among the entire sample of LGBTQ+ young people we surveyed, the majority reported worrying about climate change “a lot”. Climate change worry was related to higher rates of depression and anxiety symptoms. What does this mean? As our environment changes, LGBTQ+ young people are increasingly concerned for the future. Environmental stressors like climate anxiety cause grief, discomfort, and uncertainty. That’s why accessible, comprehensive mental health care is more important than ever for LGBTQ+ youth.
