Countless studies now highlight that protecting what remains of our forests world wide is essential if we are to address the global climate crisis. Of the total carbon stored in the world’s forests, 17% is managed by IP and LCs. Our model seeks to engage with and collaborate with local communities who are the stewards of their natural resources under economic conditions that offer them a fair and equitable deal for these efforts - in this sense the forest conservation is itself a pathway to social equity and justice, and we cannot talk about one without including the other. Creating a mutually acceptable value for the forest is what ties the two aspects together. Source: Rights and resources. #forests #indigenouspeople #community #carboncredits #conservation

Every day should be considered Environment Day. Although we can't reverse time, we have the power to grow forests, rejuvenate water sources and restore soil. Our generation has the opportunity to make peace with the land, and make a difference today and every day. Here are some ways we can all be part of #GenerationRestoration. It’s no wonder that the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world when this is how we treat our #AncientWoods. This is what South Cubbington Wood looks like today. HS2 ltd has bulldozed its way through the heart of the wood destroying and fragmenting an ecosystem that took hundreds of years to develop #Biodiversity #ClimateEmergency Not only are ancient woodlands the most biodiverse of the UK’s terrestrial habitats, but the trees, plants and soils also store vast amounts of carbon. But the planning system clearly isn't working to protect these irreplaceable habitats from developments and ill thought-out infrastructure projects. We need a new Government that prioritises biodiversity and promotes the long-term benefits of nature over short-term financial goals. We need a general election now.

This #WorldEnvironmentDay is especially relevant to the team at ChannelSight. The 2024 theme #GenerationRestoration brings awareness on how to reverse land degradation, halt desertification and build drought resilience, which resonates with our team as we consider how we can do our part. By joining forces, governments, businesses, civil society and individuals can give nature a helping hand and forge a more sustainable world for generations to come. The Nature Trust, co-founded by our CEO & Co-founder John Beckett, was developed to restore Ireland’s native forests and peatlands, while enabling others to follow our lead by planting native woodlands across Ireland. There is no lack of ambition: the goal of planting or rehabilitating 1% of the land area of Ireland (over 200,000 acres), at a cost of well over €1bn (in today’s money) over the next 20 years, but this is still only scratching the surface of the climate and biodiversity crises. A staggering 40 percent of the world’s population is impacted by land degradation, and if remained unchecked, could reduce global food productivity by 12 percent, causing food prices to soar by up to 30 percent by 2040. So, how are you, your government, business and community working towards land restoration? At this rate - both from an environmental & fiscal perspective - HS/2 is beginning to make Concorde look like value for money & common sense.

In the UK, there are more opportunities than ever for land managers and farmers to make an income off their land while restoring the natural environment. By dedicating a portion of their land that isn’t necessarily suitable for food production to nature restoration projects like tree planting instead, landowners can generate and sell “ecosystem services.” In a new research report from Revere: Investing in Natural Capital, the team explores how ecosystem service payments can be “stacked” in a way that makes them profitable for land owners, while maintaining their environmental integrity.
