🌿Recap of our plenary session: A Pathway for Protecting Our Planet. Planetary scientists, conservationists, educators and explorers came together to discuss A Pathway for Protecting Our Planet. Humanity and the planet are interconnected – we are all part of the ecosystem – and small changes by individuals can make a big difference. 👉Youth sentiment about climate change is not all outrage and anxiety; systems thinking can be used as a pathway to sustainable resistance. 👉Conservation and sustainability depends on three factors: food, finance and engaging young people, the displaced and indigenous communities. 👉We all have a part to play: small changes (such as eating less meat and flying less), can make a difference. Movements bring change. 👉Education needs to adapt and embrace systems leadership. Schools need to create interdisciplinary structures and a personalized and passion driven education system which is focused on sustainability and mental health, inclusivity and connection to nature. 👉We need to incentivize and entice people to make decisions that are friendly to the life supporting systems on which we depend. Teaching sustainability in primary #education is paramount for nurturing environmentally conscious citizens from an early age. By integrating #sustainability into the curriculum, children develop a foundational understanding of the interconnectedness between human activities and the #environment. This knowledge empowers them to make informed choices, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the planet. Moreover, instilling sustainable #values at a young age promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as students learn to analyze the environmental impact of their actions. Beyond individual awareness, primary education serves as a platform for cultivating a collective consciousness about global challenges such as #climate change and resource depletion. In essence, incorporating sustainability into primary education lays the groundwork for a generation that is not only academically proficient but also equipped to contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable and resilient future.

💡 The contradiction between #economic #growth, #sustainability, and #inclusivity lies in their competing priorities. Economic growth often emphasises rapid industrial #development and increased #consumption, which can conflict with sustainability's focus on environmental preservation and resource management. Emerging as a narrowed and skewed understanding of sustainability. ❓ Inclusivity aims to ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities, which can be sidelined by economic strategies that prioritise efficiency and profit. Being this an economic understanding of inclusion neglecting its deeper social dimension. 👉 The challenge arises in harmonising these goals where the relentless pursuit of growth can degrade natural ecosystems and widen social inequalities, thereby undermining the holistic approach required for true sustainable development. August 12th is World International Youth day. International Youth Day 2023 theme "Green Skills For Youth: Towards A Sustainable World". To mark this day, Rivers State Ministry of Youth development planned an event to mark this day. I was a part of the discussion panel, emphasizing the importance of early education and awareness on environmental issues. The aim is long-term engagement in environmental advocacy, community initiatives, and sustainable lifestyle choices. Most importantly green skills, these are skills which include technical knowledge, expertise and abilities that enable the effective use of green technologies and processes in professional settings. Green skills technology and climate technology will be the next big industry after AI as more people seek solutions to achieving a sustainable and green planet. #internationalyouthday2023

Education should encourage the holistic pursuit of Knowledge “Since the first human civilisations, knowledge has been regarded as perhaps the most important asset in humanity’s struggle to survive. Knowledge facilitates the production of more knowledge to create a virtuous cycle of knowledge creation – for example, how to create systems of communication, how to build organisations and societies and how to establish systems of rights and justice.” Knowledge is important to the growth and development of social ethics and societal order. Unfortunately, many colleges and Universities have seemed tasked with prioritizing the production of job-candidates rather than fostering learning as guardians of knowledge. The reality is that both should be accomplished, and the way forward is to invest in the holistic care of students. In order to foster knowledge, institutions must be better at providing for spiritual, intellectual, and emotional development of students. #highereducationleadership #highered #studentengagement #collegesanduniversities https://lnkd.in/gZ_kvVWw

Climate Education: Empowering Individuals, Transforming Futures A thought-provoking discussion on Kwacha Good Morning with Ms. Nachilala Nkombo this morning resonated deeply, emphasizing the pivotal role of education in tackling the climate crisis. I couldn't agree more with her insightful perspective, and I'd like to build upon her suggestions with a few additional strategies. First and foremost, let's recognize the power of education in equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to address climate change. As Ms. Nkombo highlighted, transforming our education curriculum to focus on climate solutions is essential. Every subject, from science to social studies, has the potential to incorporate climate literacy. Enhancing the Impact: - Teacher Training: Investing in professional development programs for teachers specifically focused on climate education ensures they are equipped with the latest tools and resources. Empowered educators effectively translate climate solutions into actionable practices for students. - Community Engagement: Collaborating with local communities and grassroots organizations brings context and cultural sensitivity to climate education initiatives. Together, we can create programs that resonate with diverse audiences and foster a sense of collective ownership. - Indigenous Knowledge, a Valuable Asset: Integrating indigenous knowledge systems offers unique insights into sustainability practices. By valuing traditional wisdom, we can promote a deeper understanding of our environment and cultural heritage. - Preparing for the Future Economy: The transition to a low-carbon economy demands a future-ready workforce. Educational institutions can play a pivotal role in offering skills training in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green technologies, creating a pipeline of talent for the jobs of tomorrow. - Advocacy and Policy Influence: Encouraging students and educators to engage in advocacy empowers their voices in policy discussions. Equipping them with effective communication skills to convey climate science enhances evidence-based decision-making. - Global Collaboration, Global Impact: Climate change transcends borders. International collaboration allows us to share best practices and resources, inspiring and accelerating progress worldwide. - Measuring Our Success: Let's not forget to measure our impact. Developing metrics and evaluation frameworks will guide us in refining our approaches and ensuring the effectiveness of climate education initiatives. By integrating these strategies, we can amplify the impact of climate education and empower individuals to become change agents. It's through these collective efforts that we build a sustainable future, leaving a positive legacy for generations to come. I invite everyone to join the conversation and share your thoughts on how we can further strengthen climate education initiatives. #ClimateEducationMatters #ClimateAction
SUSTAINABLE FUTURES SERIES: SUSTAINABLE EDUCATION Had a thought-provoking discussion this morning on Kwacha Good Morning Zambia about the crucial role of sustainable education in combating the climate crisis. Education, starting from preschool to universities, plays a pivotal role in equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to address climate change and enhance resilience. It's essential to transform our education curriculum at all levels to focus on climate education. By integrating climate solutions into teaching practices, we can effectively work towards a climate-secure future. Climate education is not limited to schools; it extends to our homes and communities. Empowering young people and innovators to develop climate adaptation solutions and bring them to the market is key in amplifying our impact. On a personal level, adopting sustainable lifestyles such as being energy and water-efficient, changing transport habits, and consuming sustainably sourced foods can significantly reduce our carbon footprint. Government policies promoting clean energy production and local processing of critical minerals can create new economic opportunities while helping lower the nation's carbon footprint. Investing in women and girls is a strategic move to enhance food security globally and bolster the resilience of nations. Strengthening prevention and preparedness for climate disasters across all levels is crucial. Localizing climate action initiatives and ensuring inclusivity are vital steps towards achieving effective and lasting solutions for climate change. Let's work together to build a sustainable future for all. #SustainableFutures #SustainableEducation #Sustainablelifestyles #Climate crisis Women Leaders for Climate Action Nkhonde Fumbeshi, Esq.
