From the mum and dad corner store, to your local pharmacy… all the way through to the grocery giants. What all do all retailers have in common?   >>>THE BAG>>>>   The instrumental shopping tool, that comes with you or is a part of every shopping experience.   I just read Closed Loop Partners Beyond the bag initiative impact report.   The average use time for a single use plastic bag is ~12 minutes.   The lifespan of a single used plastic bag is ~1000 years.   That’s insane….   The consortium to reinvent the retail bag which is made up of partners like Walmart , CVS Health Target Dollar General Kroger The TJX Companies, Inc. Ulta Beauty Walgreens and others are trying to reimagine, test and implement different initiatives to tackle this problem.   100 BILLION plastic bags are used in the US every year.   To my retail network here is Australia, I recommend reading this report. Its highlights some of the initiatives and potentially what could be adopted here.   I know there is a massive focus on ESG reporting, however, focus on sustainability will not slow and businesses will continued to be measured on the triple bottom line (profit, people, planet).   A lot of initiatives are deep within the supply chain. From reporting to meet mandatory requirements, to moving the needle on programs that reduce impact on the planet and people. If you’re looking at ESG reporting or ESG initiatives reach out as firms are now under the microscope to ensure we meeting the objectives. I find these stats frightening but also sadly not surprising. It can be a bit of minefield talking about ‘sustainability’ out loud, confidently, and without fear of accusation or the proverbial s*** hitting the fan. But! That doesn’t mean it should be avoided… There are guidelines to follow as well as marketers (like myself!) who are getting/are qualified to lead brands in exactly this. Given ‘whole’ sustainability (as in encompassing people, planet AND profit!) is going to become more and more of a regulatory requirement, as well as consumer expectation, it’s not something any organisation can or should shy away from. #peopleprofitplanet #sustainability #brandreputation #brandpresence #marketingcommunications

As I investigate in Mintel's Beauty & Personal Care Retailing Europe 2024 report, growing awareness around sustainability has emerged as one of the key trends shaping the BPC #retail sector, providing opportunities for retailers to differentiate themselves with their actions. Between 6 in 10 (DE) and almost three-quarters (73% ES, IT and FR) of beauty/personal care shoppers agree that brands should be more transparent about the environmental impact of their products. Acting now to prioritise #sustainability means BPC brands can have a competitive advantage by being the first to market with new products/designs. Transparency regarding the sourcing of ingredients and the manufacturing process will mitigate concerns related to greenwashing. Would you go to a shoe shop that doesn’t actually sell any shoes? 👞 🚫 As environmental impact becomes a growing concern in retail, and especially fashion, more brands are taking notice and revolutionising the way we buy and sell. For example, sustainable footwear brand, VEJA, has opened up a new store in Paris that doesn’t sell shoes… 🤔 Instead, the shop is dedicated entirely to care and repair, significantly extending the life of already-existing products. This is just one example of how ecommerce and retail is responding to calls for more sustainable options.
