One of the best things about being an academic is that you are always learning. Mastery of writing is elusive because you can always improve! Here are some of my key take aways from Karyn Gonano's book Time to Write Persuasively. Karen's byline is "crafting words that influence". I want my words/research to matter so Karyn's advice is gold for researchers, especially when it comes to writing grants and pitching why your research is important 🥇 10/10 recommend!

Who said a research paper can't be intriguing? In academic writing, capturing your audience's attention is key, starting with a compelling introduction. Just as in a book or blog post, your introduction sets the stage for what's to come and keeps readers engaged. Here are some tips to craft an interesting introduction: ✅ Create a hook that grabs the reader's attention from the start ✅Clearly state the purpose of your research to set expectations ✅ Engage your audience with a thought-provoking question or a surprising fact ✅Provide a brief overview of what your paper will cover Remember, the introduction is your chance to make a strong first impression and draw your readers into the rest of your research paper. It's back to school and teachers all over the world are preparing their courses, deciding what kind of writing tasks students will do. The contexts for writing have completely changed. Learning to write is still critical (don't let anyone tell you otherwise), but what was important 5 years ago is less important today. There is one reason I dislike academic writing. For instance, you know yam is a good food but you can't just write such a claim. You must cite an author who shares that opinion. That's not all. That author's work must be from within the last 10 years. As a result, you can say Smith (2019) claims yam is a nutritious food. I'm bored of reading dull, jargon-filled journal articles. I'm bored of writing them! This book has given me a fresh perspective. I'm now more confident to be bolder, and a bit more fun in how I write. Dull academic writing certainly isn't *the* convention, it's something we choose to do because it's comfortable and it fits in with the norm. But we can choose not to. I'd very much recommend this book. A lot of the principles naturally extend into teaching and presenting too. I should probably end with some sort of rousing call to arms, so...
