🔍Getting in cancer's way: New insights from an Emory study🔍 A team of @EmoryUniversity researchers led by Yong Wan, PhD, have uncovered a new pathway that cancer uses to evade the immune system. Wan’s group developed an inhibitor to disrupt this pathway, which allowed triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) tumors to be targeted with anti-PDL-1 therapy.     Here’s what to know:   🎯 “Immune-cold” tumors use clever tactics to survive cancer immunotherapies.  🎯 Since “immune-cold” environments render immunotherapies, such as anti-PDL-1 therapy, ineffective, immune cells cannot access and kill cancerous cells in tumors.      🎯 Emory University School of Medicine Professor Yong Wan, PhD, and his group have investigated the mechanism of immune suppression in TNBC, which involves OTUD4 and CD73 overexpression.      🎯 Inhibition of OTUD4 increases survival of mice with TNBC when combined with anti-PDL-1 therapy.    What this means:   While development of new cancer immunotherapy is incredibly important, these therapies are ineffective if immune cells cannot access and kill cancer cells in tumors. The Wan group directly addresses this issue by identifying a unique mechanism of immunosuppression in TNBC. 🎭 Setting the stage for Outstanding Cancer Management The Spring Update for NHSE Cancer Programme has a positive overall message about progress within cancer management in England. The framing of this is around three key priorities: 🔍 Early Diagnosis 🏥 Improving Treatment and Personalised Care 🏅 Improving Performance To focus on Priority 1 - the ambition is by 2028, the proportion of cancers diagnosed at stages 1 and 2 will rise from around half to three-quarters of cancer patients. This is a lofty vision that would undoubtedly change outcomes for patients, however… Part of the journey to achieving this ambition lies in reliably collecting this information. The latest figures in Q4 2023 showed that from 133 reporting NHS trusts: ⭐ Only TWO staged 100% patients 👩👩👧👧 The majority (54%) staged between 50-80% patients ⛔ Five staged fewer than 50% patients Therefore, the NHS’ Number 1 priority in cancer requires an evaluation of current systems in place to support this routine data capture. In October I attended the 2024 Early Detection of Cancer Conference in San Francisco, CA. The conference allowed me to update my knowledge on the latest developments and innovations in cancer diagnostics and early detection, following the recent completion of my MSc in Cancer Biology and Therapy at the University of Leeds. The overwhelming message presented throughout the week was the inadequacy of current screening protocols for many common cancers, with the strong likelihood of both initiation and metastasis occurring between screening regimens. An array of strategies to improve screening efficacy were presented: including non-invasive diagnostic testing and at-home sample collection kits that could improve patient experience and outcomes, while also reducing costs for healthcare services. A large proportion of the talks concerned the development of Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) tests, which would allow patients to receive comprehensive and effective screening for a multitude of both common and rare cancers. This is also including those that are difficult to detect and currently lack available screening protocols. However, it is clear that improvements in sensitivity and specificity are required to take this technology towards a clinical setting. The final day focused on innovations in AI to improve current imaging technologies, help analyze patient-derived data to identify drug targets, and predict both cancer development and treatment outcomes. Thank you to Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Canary Centre at Stanford University, and the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute for hosting this thought provoking and informative conference.

Breast and cervical cancer screening participation still not back to pre pandemic levels. An analysis by Cancer Research UK (CRUK), found that 90,000 cancer cases were detected through screening over the last 5 years. However, participation in certain cancer screening programs in England has declined. Notably, cervical screening coverage has decreased steadily over the past decade, from 74.2% in 2013/14 to 68.8% in 2023/24. Breast cancer screening levels have also failed to return back to pre-Covid levels from 64.6% in 2022/23 compared to 71.1% in 2018/19 (CRUK). The analysis further highlights improving access to screening is essential in increasing uptake. Cancer Research UK is concerned over dwindling participation in breast and cervical cancer screening. Breast, bowel and cervical cancer screening programmes have jointly spotted nearly 90,000 cancers between 2019 and 2023, according to analysis by CRUK. About 70% of eligible people take up the offer for bowel cancer screening, 69% of those invited take part in cervical cancer screening and 65% take part in breast cancer screening. #cancer #prevention #obesity

🔬 Why are more young adults getting colorectal cancer? 🔬 The trend is worrying: colorectal cancer diagnoses in younger adults have doubled since the mid-90s. Even more worrying? The fact that we're not completely sure why this is happening. To better understand this trend and to start finding ways to reverse it, the Network is funding a team of researchers at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre who are working with the Ontario Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry to collect powerful data that can help answer this question.
