East County Business Bridge, one of our initiatives, addresses economic inequity by closing the gap between those with resources and those in need. Their programs support aspiring and existing entrepreneurs to build healthier businesses that generate revenue and provide products, services, and employment for their communities. Here's a glimpse of what they do: 1. Build a network of care by enhancing connections and access to training, support, and resources. 2. Connect entrepreneurs to community navigators and service providers with deep connections to the local community. 3. Provide pathways to business ownership by assisting underserved and underrepresented individuals in starting and sustaining small businesses. Living with epilepsy presents daily challenges, yet it has also become a source of strength and motivation for me. The journey hasn't been easy, but each hurdle has reinforced my resolve to make a difference. We are delighted to confirm that ARU Peterborough has been selected as academic partner for The Lilac Review UK. Dr Tom Williamson, Assistant Principal, will join the steering board for this new government-backed independent review. Estimates suggests that improving opportunity for disabled founders could unlock an additional £230 billion for the UK economy. Disabled entrepreneurs currently account for approximately 25% of the nation’s 5.5 million small businesses, but represent only 8.6% of total small business turnover. Aiming to tackle the inequality faced by disabled-led businesses, and elevate entrepreneurial opportunity across the UK, the Lilac Review will explore lived experiences and discuss what needs to change to bring about change. SKILL BASED Platforms:  Create virtual + physical spaces for entrepreneurs to connect, share resources, and brainstorm solutions. This could be a forum, co-working space, or even a virtual circle group on SkillVill the only one specifically designed for skill sharing. REAL WORLD Collaborations:  Encourage cross-pollination of skills and knowledge. Organize workshops, hackathons, or mentorship programs where experienced professionals can work alongside aspiring entrepreneurs on real projects. WIN-WIN Peer support:  Foster a culture of mutual assistance and learning. Set up mentorship circles or buddy systems where entrepreneurs can share their struggles and celebrate each other's successes. ASK & ADAPT Curation of Your Offerings: Focus on practical solutions that listen to those you want to help. Start by asking what is blocking or better yet on SkillVill see what they need & adapt your activities to be tailor-made for the specific needs of local entrepreneurs! MICRO SOLUTIONS BASED Skill-building workshops:  Offer practical workshops on essential skills that help the participants now or within 30 days to improve their situation. REAL TIME Mentorship with a twist:  Instead of one-on-one mentors, create peer-to-peer mentorship groups where entrepreneurs can learn from and support each other in specific areas of expertise. At SkillVilll we've create packets so that this can happen anytime, anywhere and be accessible to everyone! FAST FUNDING for community projects:  Telling you this has cost me $500 at my hourly rate that every entrepreneur wastes trying to convince communities to invest in them on a single pitch. We don't have runway time to waste, and 98% of the time don't have the luxury of VC investment to burn. Money is worth more day than tomorrow. The Lilac Review will undertake extensive research into the challenges and opportunities faced by disabled entrepreneurs. The Lilac Review will deliver the following in its first two years: 1. Undertake research with a wide variety of stakeholders 2. Lead a rallying call for meaningful action 3.Develop and share best-practice materials Interim findings were published in May 2024: https://ow.ly/ciBE50SpQZF This will be followed up in 2025 with the next phase of the Review reporting which will include insight from thousands of Disabled entrepreneurs as well as input from a wide range of organisations working in disability and entrepreneurship.
