Immigration minister announced significant investments in local performing arts " On June 26, 2024, Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), announced significant investments in local performing arts as part of Budget 2024. Recognizing the vital role community facilities, such as libraries and cultural centers, play in fostering community spirit, the Federal Government has committed to enhancing infrastructure in various cities and towns. A substantial $31 million will be directed towards the Canada Arts Presentation Fund over the next two years. Of this, $800,000 will support TOHU, a performing arts theatre in Montreal, and the Festival Montréal Completement Cirque's awe-inspiring circus programs. This funding will bolster local artists, create jobs, boost tourism, and unify communities through Montreal's vibrant arts and culture scene. Moreover, Budget 2024 includes provisions to ensure a fairer tax system and enhance the living conditions across communities, emphasizing building a fair Canada for every generation. The international strategy, “Inspiring Connections”, will promote all levels of our cultural sector to the wider world, but that will not be without its challenges. Scotland's world class cultural output is being harmed by #Brexit. The conversation in Europe is about youth, mobility and emerging artists. But artists in Scotland face increased bureaucracy and financial barriers making it harder to tour and to compete. If Denmark or France wants to book a Celtic artist, it is easy to bypass Scotland and look to Ireland. As a small independent nation in Europe with a £9.6 billion surplus, it is able to use its 92 diplomatic and consular offices to support its cultural strategy. We can look on in awe and envy, but we can aspire to that in an independent Scotland.

It’s interesting listening to discussions during the #culturalmobilityforum2024 about internal mobility to increase access to arts in Africa. What could we learn from this in Cumbria to aid and connect audiences/artists across the region? There is so much great work happening across Cumberland / Westmorland and Furness - how can we join up our thinking to aid mobility and access across the country and reach new audiences? The campaign is striking and invites us to reflect on such a topical issue as racism. Now, looking at the case of Spain (with Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal), to what extent is it positive to defend immigration on the basis of sporting success? It is evident that immigration is key to the sporting successes of many countries, but do they need to be differentiated? Is the racist going to stop being racist because in his national team most of them are immigrants? I think the campaign is fine, but we have to go much further. Perhaps the best campaign against racism is to stop fueling the clichés and stereotypes that identify immigrants as criminals. What do you think?
