Feminist movements are facing intense backlash as they challenge oppressive systems and advocate for justice and liberation worldwide. 🌍💪 Last year, Gender in Detail was honored to receive a grant from the Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism for our project, Raising Awareness about the Culture of Consent, during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. On the International Day of Non-Violence, we reflect on the impact of violence against women, particularly Black and minoritised women, in the UK. At Anah Project, we are committed to fostering a culture of peace through support, education, and advocacy. Black and minoritised women face higher risks of violence, compounded by systemic inequalities. Our mission is to provide culturally sensitive support and break the cycle of violence through non-violent approaches. Together, we can build a future rooted in peace, equality, and understanding. We, along with our Sister Funds: Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism, Urgent Action Fund-Africa, and Urgent Action Fund LAC, believe that feminist crisis response and collective care are two sides of the same coin. Without collective care, we cannot sustain feminist movements and the protection of women, trans, and non-binary human rights defenders. Collective care is our collective responsibility — a radical and political act that propels us to respond to the holistic needs of human rights activists and their communities to mitigate risks and sustain their activism. It is intersectional and context-specific, and we’re committed to supporting activists to strengthen their care practices to respond to risks in an efficient and sustainable way. 🌍 Standing with Frontline Feminist Movements In a world where activists face increasing threats for standing up for human rights, organizations like the Urgent Action Fund (UAF) are crucial. UAF supports women, trans, and non-binary activists on the frontlines, ensuring they have the protection and resources to continue their vital work. By reading stories from these courageous activists, we can better understand the challenges they face—and how we can become part of a powerful collective care response. "Understanding the backlash is the first step towards shifting power and creating real change"...quoted from UAF. This morning, BCLC's Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging team partnered with the BC Public Service to kick off the moose Hide Campaign, with support from the Crown Agencies Secretariat, BC Government and the All-Crowns DI&B Dialog Network. Gender based domestic violence is an epidemic in Canada and it is more prevalent for indigenous women & girls. This morning's connect was to raise awareness, and provide a safe space for sharing lived experiences of violence against women. We heard many emotional stories which helped bring this issue to life. We learned: 👭 The Moose Hide Campaign is the only initiative that engages boys & men in the discussion and recognizes that we all need to be part of the solution 👭 Spousal violence of Indigenous women is three times higher than non-Indigenous women 👭 A woman or girl is murdered every 2.5 days in Canada 👭 Indigenous women are killed at a rate 6x that of non indigenous women 👭 Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16 Our call to action was to wear a Moose Hide Pin, which statistically generates 5 conversations about womens violence throughout the campaign. Domestic violence is preventable. For more information about the Moose Hide Campaign: https://lnkd.in/gid3F_9c #inclusion #belonging #endviolenceagainstwomen #topemployer

What does it mean to place female survivor-leaders and activists at the centre of decision-making to tackle sexual violence in Sierra Leone through MOVE, a Purposeful initiative, in partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office? Pleased to share this piece I co-authored with JUGU MAUREEN LAWSON and Isha Abis Kamara. 🌟Beyond Funding: Participatory Grantmaking in Practice.🌟 https://lnkd.in/dp3-Mn4T At its core, participatory grantmaking acknowledges that those closest to the issues are often best equipped to address them. Entrusting survivors of sexual violence with the power to make decisions not only amplifies their voices and work, it also ensures that resources are directed towards initiatives that resonate with their lived experiences and are grounded in the realities and needs of the communities they serve. Participatory grantmaking is not without its challenges, however. We offer our reflections on this process to share our learnings and to support others who are interested in implementing similar models of inclusive, community-led decision-making. As we continue this work, we remain dedicated to supporting our panel and grantee partners, and documenting our learnings, showing that it is indeed possible to shift decision-making power to survivor-leaders and activists.
